    Considering the Military?

Not your typical BG thread but figure I'd inquire.

Basically, I'm finishing up my Bachelor's degree either next month or by the end of summer.

Ideally, I'd like to get into pharmacy school, but it's pretty competitive and I've already been shot down before (Will try again w/ the Bachelor's and stop giving them money in application fees)

Second choice is teaching English in Korea.

Third option is possibly joining a military branch.

Then looking for a job w/ the bachelor's in biology.

That said, just looking for general info. With a Bachelor's, I'd be starting as an officer. That said, idk the diff between military ranks and whatnot. What would starting as an officer do for me vs as the starting rank?

As for branches, I know to stay away from the Marines; was considering the army (as I hear they have a lot of bases in Korea).

Figured if I put in at least 4 years, could get some pretty good benefits from it, then still go back and do one of the other things on the list afterward.

Why would you become a jarhead when you're educated? I thought that was for poor people who couldn't get into school.

Assuming I don't get into pharm school, a bio bachelor's is pretty basic unless I take it to a masters and specialize something (and if I do that, can have the military pay for that vs taking out loans; why not?)

If you do decide to sell your freedom and soul in exchange for mediocre pay, time away from family, and contributing to the death of others on foreign soil, then pick the Navy or Chairforce. They at least treat their officers well and you won't likely die.

As for the military paying for your school, it's faster/cheaper/safer to just get loans. You'll need SOME type of higher education to get a real job, as stated above.

I don't talk to any of my family aside from my uncle (and we're not close in any way shape or form); so no issue there (again was considering picking up everything and moving to Korea lol)

Join the military. Then you'll almost definitely be going to Korea for free in a few years.

Where have you looked at pharmacy schools? I know a lot of people would say lolTexas, but Texas has a lot of schools and openings. I think last year was actually the first year that there was a surplus in the number of pharmacists graduating and the number needed in Texas too, so I don't believe the schools haven't started slowing down their admissions or anything.

Only FL schools. Paying out of state = wouldn't be worth doing in a million years lol

FAMU, UF, USF all have good pharmacy schools. So does Nova but it's private so I imagine you've already crossed it off your list.

USF is basically the only one I haven't applied to (since it has more requirements; needed some classes that I hadn't had at the time to apply, like Biochem) should have covered them all by now in my program though

I mean, I get that for undergrad and some graduate programs (like some PhD and law school), but with pharmacy, you're taking out loans so you can be making six figures in four years (unless you decide to do a residency, in which case it'd be five years). With pharmacy, it's not guaranteed, but as long as you're responsible and get things done, it seems like a safer bet.

As a side question, my sister is trying to join the Navy atm. She's 19 and I think has 1 year of college completed. I tried talking her out of it, but she's a strong girl who can make her OWN decisions and didn't listen to me. Anyway, now we're not speaking. Ah well.

But, really, is it something I need to be worried/upset about? I'm not really scared she's gonna get killed, just don't agree with our military really.

True, but honestly, it's Cream Soda here. I'm as low maintenance as they come. As long as I can live comfortably, I really don't give a shit at the end of the day. Internet, lights, water? I'm good to go.

May apply to a few schools outside of the state, but w/ pharmcas, it gets pretty pricy ($50/school after initial application if I remember correctly)

Honestly unless she goes to a combat zone, you have better odds of dying while on duty as a police officer, paramedic or fire then you do in the Navy.

I dont have any input on the military, but I have a close friend who has a bachelors in biology. He got hired within a few months of graduating, worked in a lab second shift testing samples, got promoted about a year later to a first shift lead, got another promotion about a year after that running the lab. He sits at a desk all day listening to podcasts, overlooking reports, makes a decent salary etc. You can do well with a bachelors in biology if you're debating looking strictly down that route.
