Core 2 Duo vs Dual Core?

Time to upgrade again. Haven't been following puter stuff recently and am doing research now. What's the difference between the 2? other than AMD vs Intel. Which is better? I've always been an AMD fanboi, but am willing to give Intel a shot.

    Currently looking at AMD Athlon64 X2 4600+ (2.4GHz/2x512KB) vs INTEL Core2 Duo E6400 (2.13GHz) Box Edn -Alone-

both are currently around the same price for me.

and, can someone recommend a mobo for me?

    My current Rig

    AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    MSI K8N Neo4
    MSI NX7600GT
    2x 1GB Corsair PC400
    Seagate Barracude ATA100 250gb
    Antec 410W TruePower

one more question...getting a new hard drive as well, is it advisable to use Norton Ghost to ghost everything from my old hard drive to a SATA one?

you can ghost from one drive to another NP as long as its the same machine

If you go AMD X2 don't settle for anything less then the 5000+. Even still, when I rebuild my new rig, I will go Core 2 Duo. Sonomaa is 100% right. C2D > AMD....as of right now.

*Edit: If you're going to stay with AMD and going with the X2(AM2 socket), check out this Asus Mobo :ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition

Core 2 Duo is just Intel's basic dual core, 64-bit chip. So you're basically comparing the similar products at that point. Right now, yeah, Intel is ahead.

Ghost is made more for backing up a machine, or creating a hard drive image to build multiple machines of the same kind. Since you'll be making a new machine, that probably would not be the way to go about doing things.

    Core 2. Thread done.

Get the E6600, it's definitely the most bang for your buck.

My new laptop has a core 2 duo and it's great. As everyone's said, intel is ahead of amd for now after a while of the opposite.

get the core 2 duo for def, theres some real good boards for them and they are so nice to oc, very low vcore~ you could push it to 2.8gig with the right mobo and a good hs... if your into that

with your hdd, if your getting a new one, why not get 2 and go for a raid 0 array aswell :D

    thanks for the replies =)

my other alternative would be to hold out for longer, and just dump my IDE and get a SATA.

don't think i'd be doing raid 0, its not like i'm running a server or anything =p don't need the benefits.

Also ,you probably have a lot of custom settings and stuff, but i've always prefered a clean install over a disc image. Unless im just recovering from a faulty drive or something.

    The friend of mine who built my PC has this mobo and simply loves it. Of course, his gig is a lot better than mine;

    AMD FX-62
    BFG X8800 GTX
    Antec 700W

The dude has a pure powerhouse, imo anyways.

yes, and use sysprep if you're swapping out mobos and don't want to format.

Almost missed this one but FFFFFFFUCK yeah, dump ide. so fucking slow now. If you got the money, get yourself some nice scsi 15k rpm hdds. They're cheap. You can get 2 72 gig 15k scsi drives from eBay for about 250.

Also, raid 0 has nothing to do with running a server. If you go the scsi route, you might just set up a raid 0 if you have 2 hdds.
