    Suse Linux

I know not many run any linux on these boards (I could be wrong) but I am screwing around with Suse Linux 9.3 on my laptop in a Virtual PC. I am very new and I would love to learn how to use it if someone is willing to teach me. I am so noob I don't know how to get into the GUI after full install. If anyone uses Suse and can help me out a bit please post on here or message me on AIM.

The problem is caused by SIMM crosstalk, usually caused by an extra loop in the redundant loopback.

First thing you need is a processor that is ISO 9000 compliant.. you might wanna call a local computer store and see if you can trade yours in for one that is or maybe get yours upgraded.

Using laptop and Virtual PC. Compaq Presario X1000. Bought at pawnshop so I assume it has no more support on it.

Ya, the ISO 9000 upgrade for that will only cost ya like $15 at the most just check with your local computers store or you could call Geek Squad.

It is worth it though because Linux is really cool.

You sure its ISO 9000 it seems to install fine just boots into a dos like thing when I tell it to boot into suse linux. It asks for username and pass as well.

Ya when it tries to display any graphics it can't because of all the big to little endian conversion errors which happen when you're dealing with SIMM crosstalk.

Would this be because I selected my laptops graphics card and test came up as failed?

Also I see no error when it boots to the dos prompt thing with the linux background.

@devek: ok smartass, stop giving him the BOFH runaround.

ikith, i'm not familiar with the suse installer, but one of two things probably happened: either you didn't install an xwindows server and a desktop environment, or if you did, then you didn't specify to start up in runlevel 5 by default. runlevel 5 is the one that starts a gui automatically.

during the install, did it ask you to specify a root password? if so, then where it prompts you for a username, type "root", and then enter the password. if you log in successfully, you'll probably see a prompt like:

    [root@localhost ~]#

it might not look exactly the same, but try typing "startx"... if it says the command wasn't recognized then you haven't installed a gui yet.

it's probably best for you to start over and try ubuntu, because that's a lot more user-friendly for people who are trying to familiarize themselves with linux. there are a ton of guides out there too, just google "ubuntu guide" or poke around on the ubuntu site. there are some that are specially tailored to people who are used to working in ms windows, too.

    good luck.

ah, i didn't see the post about your graphics test failing, but that would be why xwindows isn't starting. i don't have any experience running linux in a virtual pc, but you can download ubuntu here: http://www.ubuntu.com/

honestly if you're just trying to try linux out, see what the gui is like, etc... you don't even have to install linux per se--you can just run it off of a live cd. knoppix is a linux distro that you can run off of a live cd that people often use to salvage data from borked windows installs. get it here: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

The problem probably lies with the Virtual PC interface and how it's virtualizing your video card... Were you able to get the root prompt? If so, try configuring X again. In suse the command might be "sax2", but I'm not sure.
I haven't used Virtual PC myself, and it's getting late or I'd try to google for answers--perhaps your BOFH devek can enlighten you with his google-fu.

Is there a reason you're keeping Windows on it and just installing linux in a Virtual PC? If not, just do a full-fledged install so that you don't have to worry about the added layer of indirection. Honestly though, try Ubuntu. There's a much stronger community around that distro, so there's a lot more documentation available for it.

If you don't want to affect the Windows installation that's already on the system, then download Knoppix and boot from the live cd. That's probably much easier than trying to get SUSE to run on a virtual pc image.

VPC doesn't virtualize the actual video hardware in your machine, that might be your problem. It emulates an S3 Trio64 (according to Wikipedia) on the PCI bus. Most likely you can just let the installation program detect the card, I know that Ubuntu or Fedora should do that anyway.

A black belt in google-fu, that sounds so nerdy and "nice" at the same time >.>

OT: Yes, you should try with Ubuntu/Knoppix first, if the liveCD runs, then most linux distributions should work with some tweaks here and there.

Or you could post some error messages, so people has an idea of what is going on.

I'm getting screwy graphics in VPC when installing Ubuntu 6.10 its really messy and no solid readable parts. I've tried decreasing the rez with no avail.

    For real though..

If Virtual PC emulates a S3 trio..

    rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

S3 cards will be auto detected and configured perfectly and don't need a config file because they don't have any features advanced enough to require configuration.

At this point the OP has no way to tell if I am being a bastard or telling the truth

I just hit install and it increases the screen size and gives me an unreadable old dos like screen. It does this automatically when booting from the CD and hitting Install or Start Linux. Its spread out and is a bunch of lines.
