American History X, white supremacists in general

I have seen this movie 15+ times, its one of my all time favorite. Its one of my favorites because I can still watch it and get chills from it as if it were my first time watching it. However, after watching it now, I realized that I have never personally have known anyone who identified themselves as being any type of white supremacist. I mean, the closest I came was last week getting into an argument with a guy who said his family owned slaves, he was raised by them (he was born in the 40's), and that they "treated them well." When I told him he was wrong he said he was from the south and we northerners dont know about the real south and that slavery existed until the 1950's. It was sad and funny at the same time.)

Anyways, does anyone here know anyone personally who is like the neo-nazis in this movie? Or, probably if you are from the South, does it exist in visible view around you? Any interesting stories? Within my english major I have focused on American race relations and never in any of my classes have we heard first hand accounts from people who have actually seen this shit.

I live in Oklahoma at the moment but I have never noticed any white supremacy, but there is definitely an unfamiliarity with African-Americans which interestingly enough leads to some really racial comments and views which they don't find racist at all. It's really weird. But since it's the Bible Belt I think people try their best not to be vocal about not being a perfect human being and loving everyone, but racism most definitely exists more so here than I ever noticed when I lived on the east coast, even in my quiet, predominantly white, generally liberal town of 13,000 in Connecticut (New Fairfield), the racism wasn't as obvious or wide spread as it is here.

My mom lives in Oklahoma, and from what I've gathered from the town she lives in there is some tension with whites and blacks but mostly with the younger people. My brother used to get in a ton of fights with other black children when he was around the ages of 12-14 when he lived in the OK.

My father is a white nationalist but he doesn't feel like hurting anyone of a different race. He just believes in the whole white, Christian, straight America thing. He doesn't believe in evolution either. Texas ftw.

You don't live too far from me.

I don't see any White Supremacist in my area either. Mostly just old people who drop the "N" bomb at inappropiate times

The only place I really saw it wasn’t in America at all it was when I spent 3 months in Manchester. My friend Joey who was black got ran across by some skin heads at a pub and started shit with him. We ended up just leaving and going back home. Only place I really ran across any racism outside of dropping the n word

Posing a hypothetical question so don't think anything of this.

Why is it OK for black/asian/mexican/whatever to have pride in their race by proclaiming "black pride"/"asian pride"/whatever but the second anyone mentions "white pride" all shit hits the fan. I'm not asking this because I believe in white supremacy or anything, I really don't care about race at all, but just because I remembered there was some issues with it when I was in high school. There was an "Asian Club" as well as an "African American club" and a few students protested because they thought it not OK to have clubs that are racially exclusive when a "white club" could have been cause for instant trouble.

Also I have seen American History X countless times and it is by far one the best films I've ever seen.

Yea I don't know what the fuck that symbolizes, but their little club ruined the whole "white power" idea for quite a while.

Because generally white pride is associated with trouble, and black/asian/mexican pride is generally just associated with minor annoyances and/or food.

    Edward Norton is King.

To answer your question, I think it all derives from the history of both white people in America and white people on a global scale. Seeing as this is America, Ill consider that for this argument.

Whites in America, while it has been "America," have held the majority of the government and thus have had the power to enforce their ideas and beliefs in the country. I use the term "white" loosely because it is only a skin tone that encompasses many, many different ethnic backgrounds. Still, in America, this skin tone has held the power and with that power has done some really, really shitty things. From the black perspective, white people were responsible for slavery (i know native african chiefs and such had a part in it but lets ignore that for this argument as it is not relevant to what was going on in america), and slavery has up until now and for a very long time, if not forever, has altered the racial relations in america between whites and blacks. Seeing as blacks only became equal to whites 40 years ago, there is the whole movement of the blacks to gain civil rights and all the other events tied into that that make "black pride" valid. White people have been triumphant in the history of America too, we study that when we examine the Revolutionary, Civil, and World Wars (even if we ignore the Native Americans in doing so). For the reason that blacks have been bastardized and shat on for a large part of American history, there is more incentive to have "black pride" without argument.

I will perhaps argue for the Asians and Mexicans later but I have to get the green relic from the Green Dragon in Chrono Cross. BBL.

Sadly, whites get the short end of the stick because their "kind" has perpetrated alot on other ethnicities. It is similar to how a black man can get away with racism towards a white man, but not vice versa. It is a ridiculesly obvious double standard that is rarely ever brought up in the black community. But you can see these sort of pride movements in every repressed group there is, such as gays. However there is a point where people forget that you won't be able to rebuild your community with pride parades or clubs alone. Having pride in who you are is a nice first step in fixing the issues of repression, but it can't just stop there.

Sadly, most of these pride movements only end up forming a sort of arrogance on the part of the group in charge of it, and ultimately they become a detriment to the community as a whole if they don't evolve and accomodate themselves with other groups.

    .
Couldnt agree more. MLK, Du Bois, and Malcolm were so far and above Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton its sad. Granted they were in a different era and things were completely different but still.

Re: American History X, white supremacists in general

Adding on to what Kuya said, there's definitely a phenomena of "white guilt". Progressive/liberal whites who've realized that even though they would never dream of committing the crimes of the past (and present), their racial identity has done a lot of fucked up things and on a symbolic level, any sort of White Pride parade would be more offensive than anything. It also involves cringing/feeling angry or offended when you witness white people being trashy/ignorant/etc. The alternative that has developed, I suppose, is more specific forms of pride for us fair-skinned folk: Irish/Celtic pride, German pride (although that can get kinda sketch, lol), Italian pride (sup guidos!) and so on. It's all really a shame though, because I think it is kinda natural to be enthusiastic about your heritage, to whatever degree. And commonly among whites, you're dealing with pretty diverse sub-groups: for instance I'm English/German/Irish/French/Russian/Norwegian- all "white" but there's a lot of variety/distinction there, and you can't really band together like hispanics/asians can.

Anyways, where I live, you don't see so much white racism towards blacks as you do towards mexicans and native americans. It's regional I guess- ignorant whites lock in on the biggest "problem" and focus all their stupid on it.
