Hmmm....I don't see any issues.
Oh, that's right, Firefox with NoScript.![]()
Someone from my linkshell also said Norton also popped up with one when they visited that site. Do you know what exact trojan it detected?
When I was using Firefox with no script it wouldn't let me get to the search button unless I untoggled the blocks on the advertising providers. But if they want the advertising money otherwiki needs to stop having ad agencies who accept advertising that has trojans.
check Jobs>War
You don't actually need the button. Just type what you want into the box and hit enter. (Means that general search is unavailable, but at least you don't have to unblock the ads).Originally Posted by thinktank
Cant say im surprised if it turns out to be true.
I only have google-analytics and otherwiki enabled with noscript. looksmart and fmpub are not enabled and I still have access to search otherwiki with their search box at the top (and their autocomplete as you type, one of the nicer things on there). And yes I went to jobs>war to check.
Then again I not only use firefox with noscript and adblock but also use a modified host file. Go here for the host file as it's one of the best things you could do to protect yourself as it works above just about everything that accesses the internet within windows. Here is an app that makes managing and updating the host file a breeze.
Well, it's FFXIclopedia, what do you expect? You know, the ones with the donation scam. What were you even doing there in the first place? People should know better than to go to shady sites like that.
i suggest you guys really be careful...i had firefox with no script plugins always at full security and avg + antivir virus programs + spybot + CCleaner + ad aware 07 all updated and scanned every night before i goto sleep. Low and behold my shit still got hacked while sleeping for 3 hours and i never access any ffxi sites besides this forum and KI forums once in a blue moon. The trouble SE is having us go through with the loops is very devastating in getting our shit back. Just be careful, these hacks seem to be really random and out of the blue regardless of how well protected you may be.

Well, I'm not trying to imply they'd do it on purpose, as it'd be stupid of them to alienate the few people they have left.Originally Posted by Attila
But still, you have to consider how well you trust a site when you visit it. No site is immune to hacks, but some sites are probably maintained by more reliable and trustworthy people than others. For example, I'd sooner go to google.com than superserialcracks.ws. Likewise, I'd sooner visit BGwiki than the other wiki.
My AV or w/e didn't detect any trojan but for the most part I've believed that wikia has been pretty safe.
what I do know is that they recently changed their layout which seems to slow down the site by alot.. at least for me.. using IE. I think its scripts loading.. They even crashed my browser on occasion..
Funny thing is you don't have to visit an ffxi related site to catch one of these bugs. It could be nearly any ad supported site if it is indeed the ads giving you the download, so you probably made the mistake of enabling one too many sites with noscript, didn't enable iframe blocking, didn't have a modded host file, or didn't have a good firewall.
I use opera whenever I decide to surf questionable things as I've found commodo firewall to be retardedly anal about whatever opera does. Downloading any .exe or other executable within opera makes commodo go apeshit, which is nice. That's kind of what a software firewall should do anyway and if it at least doesn't do something like that then maybe you need the settings a little more strict or altered. Commodo firewall though is extremely nice with lots of options and ability for being free with only an email address for registration.
Spybot search and destroy also has a very tricky trojan fake that pushes itself very high on google. Be very careful when getting it since you may get the wrong one extremely easily if you're not familiar with what it should look like. It originally comes from here.
If you're going to stick with IE7 or whatever please, please install the modified host file I linked to earlier. I can't stress getting this enough as it completely stops access from all the sites listed in the file. The host file manager prog I linked makes it painless to update.
I know my friend warned me about a trojan notice she got with her av, but she didn't get the details of the virus
It's usually not the ads, but the site itself. Someone puts an iframe on it that causes an unprotected person to download a keylogger via the realplayer exploit from October.Originally Posted by orinthia

Probably unrelated. Changing my password anyway.![]()
Agreed. It's still a fine source of info and I use it on a regular basis... so I hope there's no virus there. (Even with Firefox and adblock/noscripts, I still worry.)Originally Posted by Attila

A question but, would using a seperate laptop to browse sites / info help not getting ur shit hacked on ur main computer if u did nothing but play safe.
FFXIclopedia made me want to stab myself earlier, because every page would churn for a few seconds and then Iceape (the continuation of the Mozilla, not Firefox, codebase that was renamed due to some lame trademark crap) would pop up the "This script seems to be infinitely looping, do you want to stop it?" message. This is on Linux, however. I wonder if it was something shady or just broken (I thought it might be an issue with their new skin). I was getting it on every page, but it seems gone now.
This seems to be a result of their new skin. I went there and every second you are on a page it increases the memory usage. It gets to a certain point (about 400k) and then some windows OS files get corrupted. If you do a restart, your chkdsk should automatically replace the corrupted files (mine did), but I do not recommend visiting the site.Originally Posted by Bakthi
Edit: It appears to be fixed. I never did encounter any form of trojan though, just the nasty script error.
