    Trio'ing Ashu Talif Targeting the Captain

    Hi,
    I've read through this thread today again to recap what I already knew about the battle, since I've been wanting to try this out for a while now (read: years). It didn't turn up anything new and I'm still kind of ticked off about people saying it's 'piss easy'. Cus nothing's easy when you don't know how to do it and I'm afraid I do not know how me and my two friends can trio this without a drastic revision in strategy.

    First things first, jobs: #1 THF or RDM, #2 BLU or WHM, #3 WAR or PLD
    Second thing: I don't care about the gloves, so I'm not concerned about the surprise/SA pull.

    First run was a long time ago as THF WHM PLD. Failed to deaggro captain right away, but did eventually. Ended up taking a long ass time killing monkey then pretty much unable to damage captain enough and WHM was running out of MP.

    Second run was last week and total failure.

    Third run was last sunday and it was pretty decent as RDM PLD/NIN BLU/NIN. ES Grav'd captain and ran out and we killed monkey at the 17 minute mark. With only 13 min left I knew we were probably not gonna make it, but meh. We tried to kite it first, but soon decided damage would be too slow. Tried straight tanking it but the PLD was having trouble and getting hit with IT++ Barbed Crescents. When MP was low we went back to kiting and it was only down to 75%. Then a second attempt at straight tanking it ended in Barbed Crap killing the PLD and our run.

    Ideally we'd get a 4th or 5th person to join until we get the hang of it, but that may be harder than just throwing more exp at it. What setup would work best using what strategy?

    I was thinking about trying THF/NIN WAR/NIN WHM because people in the aforementioned thread said THF was able to tank both monkey and captain. Also, I liked the strategy involving the person with hate kiting and the other DD running after and switching around when hate does.

    Another option might be to go RDM/nin BLU WAR and kite captain on RDM since it can keep good hate with spells. Then DD's can just run behind it and whack away. Though I'm not confident about being able to pull it off since I was unable to hold him indefinitely on run #2 as RDM.

    Please lend me your advice.

    For fight #3, that kiting strategy might work. I know, however, that a BLU/nin can't tank the captain indefinately - he's just too much of a bastard to straight-up tank. He loves double attacking, but he is a corsair, so if you can get him to just chase you while firing bullets, that might work better. Perhaps bringing some ranged damage (RNG, BLM) might be better if you can keep him from straight-up slaughtering your tanks.

    Personally, I've done #3 with 4 people, but you'd need a very solid setup for 3.

    This should work, my old Ashu Talif trio set was MNK BLU RDM before the RDM quit FFXI, and we did #3 for a while when he had levelled DNC and wanted the pants. Aside from the first few attempts, we didn't try to get the 3rd chest after we read that it only drops those barb. hands, so if you want those, adjust accordingly. Anyway, I'd pull Bubbly on BLU, run down below deck and back up to the exit of the BC, and the RDM would pull the Captain off me. MNK and I would fight Bubbly while the RDM deaggroed the captain and then came to help cure (a couple times he didn't deaggro it, but was still able to toss out the occasional buff and cure when he was far enough around the steps from it).

    After Bubbly died, we'd go fight the deaggroed Captain, and what the person above wrote about it attacking too fast and double-attacking too often for one person to tank is correct, you have to bounce hate between the two of you. If you screw it up a few times and take damage it's no problem, though, since as the RDM runs low on MP he can toss out a gravity and you go kite it up and down the stairs until he's rested back up.

    Hope this helps.

    Edit: I just noticed you wrote RDM/NIN in the part I quoted. He came RDM/WHM and it worked fine.

    Did it for a long time with pld/nin, mnk/nin, rdm/whm.
    Pld entered room to backstab captain and ran to the outside and kit around stairs.
    I entered room when captain name turned red on the pld attack, chi blast monkey and start killing it right there.
    Then we go kill the captain, with me chasing captain and starting to kite when i get hate. Pld curing me for keep the most hate, rdm doing his rdm stuff, me running mindlessly being behind or before the captain. When Sentinel's up, straight tank a few for making things faster. Start to run again if DD get hate, as like said by others, he's sometimes on a i-rape-you mode.

    This may be a silly question, but how exactly do you get the Captain to deaggro you? Last week we were missing bodies from our static so we tried to 4-man it (RDM/WHM/PLD/MNK). We wiped the first go, reraised, and the RDM died again trying to kite Bubbly. The MNK and the PLD got the Captain down to ~30% (all 3 of us used our 2 hours) while the PLD tanked Bubbly and fought the Captain at the same time. x.x Had the RDM lived, we probably could have won this (after awhile I just completely ran out of mp) or had I brought some ethers or crap.

    Regardless, it would be so much easier if we didn't have worry about one or the other pwning our faces, as the last bunch of runs have been messy 5-man attempts.

    We're like 2/~15 on pants. Need at LEAST one more pair. We have no more want for Moufles at this point.

    If I remember right, you can lose the captain by running for the upper deck after aggroing him in his quarters. He should let up somewhere around the hold door. I don't think there's enough space in the zone to lose hate second time, though, so whoever is fighting Bubbly will soon have to deal with the captain unless the kiter aggros him again.

    PLD/NIN, DRG/WHM, RDM/WHM was always really easy, I'd suggest that.

    Also, as long as he can shoot you he won't deaggro. This is soemthing that I learned a long time ago. A mob needs to chase you and be unable to act on you for about 20-25 seconds before it deaggros.

    @Therin
    Anything special you did while fighting captain? Did hate bounce between DRG and PLD?'

    @Suiram
    I'm just amazed that you managed to duo the monkey while the RDM kited the captain. This is what happened on our 2nd run which I didn't say too much about cus the BLU and the WAR went down in about 30 seconds. I wasn't at the fight so I dunno what exactly happened. Also, won't kiting on RDM/WHM make you take a lot more damage making it harder to keep MP up?

    I think we're going to try the RDM kite method. I just hope I don't screw up.

    If the WAR had hate on the Monkey the entire time I can see why he went down fast, as with the Captain, it's important to bounce hate between the two jobs. I'd try to pull hate with physical spells early on after a few attack rounds when he was putting up shadows, as well with flashes, and then curing after he got hit the first time, so was able to make him look at me. It was definitely something we got better at after a few runs (took 15 I think to see the pants). Also, like I said, the RDM was usually able to deaggro the captain after some time and help cure, and even before deaggro if the captain was the top of the stairs and he was at the bottom he could toss out a buff or cure, it stops a lot to shoot. We would fight Bubbly right where you enter/exit.

    You can get a ??? box from this chest, in addition to the one you'd normally get, but it's much less common than the ??? gloves. I'd say maybe 1/10.

    I've never seen a ??? box from the 3rd chest, only ??? gloves. That's the first I've heard of it.
