I just found out about this phone today. It's supposed to put the iPhone to shame from what I've read. People have been talking about it for about 2 weeks and the phone will release Oct. 22nd. Only through T-mobile though

I'm currently a AT&T user, but I think this G1 is really cool. I've only found 1 website that says that you can unlock the phone and use it with AT&T. BUT once unlocked it works off the EDGE connection.

So /BG/, what do you guys think?

i'm a t-mobile customer, and i'm eligible to get a new phone as of october 30th. definitely thinking about picking this up, they sent me an email about the G1 a few weeks ago.

edit: only thing that worries me about getting one is the usual assortment of crap you have to deal with when a new gadget launches, before they streamline and smoothen the manufacturing process out.

What I'm most interested in finding out is if you can unlock it. When I got my blackjack1 as a free upgrade, I formatted and reloaded it with Windows Mobile 6. Which it came with 5. Unlocked it using a program I found and it was good to go.

I want a G1, but scared to order one, it come in and I can't use it, lol.

Already played around with one at work. Its cool but really bad for retail stores also. Barcode scanner on the phone will scan and tell you places around you, and online, where you can get the product and for lowest cost. SUCKS for people at retail stores because most pricematch and this is gonna be a killer haha. Over all it seemed ok but I got bored with it quick.

one thing that bugs me about both the Iphone and G1 is Stereo Bluetooth so fucking hard to put on a device? am I missing something?

I never understood this. Why are they advertising at $179 but on their website it says $399.99 ($299.99 oniline "discount"). How do you get it for $179? lol

$179 is the 2 year contract deal. 299 and 399 is the straight up buy the phone. At least that's my understanding of the entire thing.

I still want to know if I can use it with AT&T?!

key for the G1 is going to be developer support for android, unfortunately it's a wait and see type of thing. i'm 99% sure i'm going to get one anyways, the timing is too fortuitous to pass up.

it looks slick although i'd choose the iphone over it for now... but screw at&t, so g1 it is. and idk about unlocking it ejac, the only thing i could find is that it's sim-locked... so there should be a way around it i'd think.

One huge thing that sticks out to me is the texting advantages. iPhone uses a on screen keyboard. G1 has a slide out of the screen and reveals a qwerty keyboard, much nicer.

Also the fact that the G1 is a open source OS.

The iPhone has a superior MP3 player to the G1, ATT has a better 3G network, Apple's touchscreen is more advanced as well I think. The on screen keyboard is pretty intuitive imo and its not really an issue for me texting. I definitely think as a platform Android is currently more interesting then the iPhone, but the G1 doesn't really match up to the iPhone atm(only advantage I can think of is that it can copy + paste text?). Also, to sort of counterbalance the open source argument, some of successful iPhone App publishers who have thrived with Apple's system have stated they have no intention for migrating to Android since the amount of headaches they will have for keeping track of and fixing bugs across the plethora of Android devices that will soon be available isn't worth the extra revenue they may get.
