Car parts shopping

Just curious, for those of you who order replacement parts only, where do you get them? I just ordered a new front bumper cover, front left fender, left headlight, and right fog light for my Ford Focus ZX3 from speedycarparts.com and it cost me right about 200 bucks altogether. I personally thought that was pretty cheap. What are some other good places to get parts from?

Also, does anyone know what the part above your wheel that covers the top of where your wheel goes? I know it's a bad description, but I cant think of any other way to describe it. It's like a black peice of hard plastic that is molded in a half circle to keep stuff from getting in from your tires i suppose?

If you're looking for performance parts, check your local speed shop. I'm sure there will be a place in town that does performance stuff, but hopefully you can find one in your region that does more than just wheels and exhausts. These places can usually get all sorts of parts in for you for essentially the same price you would pay online - some shops may waive any markup or stocking fees if you agree to have them installed at that shop. This is just my experience with a couple of performance garages/shops in my city, but unless they are total asshats they should be pretty good about it. And if they're going to be jerks, then take your business elsewhere.

Oh, and if you are looking for repair manuals or part numbers check out AutoZone's Repair Zone website. It's a really fantastic resource as it includes scans of OEM repair manuals (the kind dealership mechanics have access to) for a lot of late-model cars.

I would suggest possibly looking into a forum or community based on enthusiasts who own and/or drive/repair/etc your model on a regular basis. Just because a company can sell and ship quality products for one make/model, doesn't mean they do for others. They'll know precisely where you should poke around on the web and, sometimes, in your local area.

That aside, for general parts that I don't typically purchase from a specialty vendor, I'll usually hit up my local NAPA or I'll use rockauto.com. I would be careful about purchasing from a general vendor, though, only because unless you know specifically what you want, chances are the employees only know what their computer will shoot up.

Nothing like arguing with a douchebag AutoZone employee about why I don't want Bosch plats that foul within a month of being put in a turbo engine.
