    MNK Gear Question

    I'm currently leveling MNK and I like to have gear ready quite a few levels in advance so I'd like to know if I"m on the right idea for what I should be getting. I'm curious as to if what I list and progress to is correct for TP and WS

    I will have 0 H2H merits so is this the general aim I should be going for, or is there anything else I should change? Thanks in advance.

    Didn't notice the topic on the second page or I would have bumped it <_< but that seemed more about end game than progression. A mod can merge this if necessary.

    Just at a quick glance, WS neck (Raging and Asuran) should be:

    Spike > Peacock Charm.

    Peacock Charm over Faith Torque too since I"m throwing out sea gorget?

    Should have clarified. Spike > Charm > then Gorget / Torque. Not sure what performs better between the two.

    WS head pieces - Hissho Hachimaki or OHat will outperform Shura head and keep both snipers on for Asuran.

    EDIT: Most people would also rather use life belt over Black Belt.

    Depending on what you're planning to use your monk for, you might consider more accuracy for your asuran/raging fists (since you mentioned 0 h2h merits). Also, STR has very little affect on Asuran.

    I generally go toreador's/Rajas on rings (or two toreador's for really evasive mobs), and ohat over shura kabuto on WS (not that I have shura head, but if I did I would still do ohat on asuran).

    But if you're planning to use monk for salvage (and intend to use sushi for the last 30 minutes of the run, or get madrigals), more STR/attack is better, attack having the larger impact.

    Your TP gear looks good though, with the exception that I would probably use fumas until dune boots, and even then it's debatable until you get kick attack merits.

    Edit: poster above me beat me to it, and I forgot about hissho hachimaki - that's awesome on asuran too.

    The Asuran set was the one I was most concerned with because of recent threads, I was unaware that you needed as much accuracy as you did, and especially coming from other jobs, I'm using to piling on STR.

    Yay! Another chance to whore my blog! You are not your fucking O's Kote.: On the Cheap #1: Monk.

    I think you are operating under a few "old" assumptions about AF. AF is essentially just 8 normal hits. You will want all accuracy and attack.

    You definitely want to use Life Belt for AF not Black Belt, in addition to the other suggestions being made.

    Things that are up to personal preference:

    I don't like Rajas. The number of hits and the variables involved to getting to exactly 100TP for MNK, for me, decrease the need for Store TP. I use Blood (free) and Ulthalam's.

    I don't know what other jobs you have leveled and your other choices but I use Ethereal Earring also.

    I prefer Charger's Mantle for TP and AF.

    I always preferred Dune over Fumas, but my MNK was fully merited when I was making that choice.

    So to check the corrections, my Asuran macro is going to look more like this:

    Head: Empress ---> Voyagers Sallet ---> O Hat ---> Hissho Hachimaki
    Neck: Spike --> Peacock Charm ---> Faith/Sea Gorget
    Ear1/2: Beetle ---> Spike ---> Mermam/Etheral
    Body: Jujitsu ---> SH+1 ---> Shura
    Hands: Okote ---> Bkote
    Ring1/2: Rajas/Vision ---> Sniperx2
    Back: Wolf --> Jaguar --> Amemet+1 ---> Charger Mantle
    Waist: Brown ---> Life Belt
    Legs: Republic Subligar ---> Shura Haidate
    Feet: Federation Kyahan ---> Denali

    I few other questions concerning gear sets I didn't mention. If it matters my MNK would mainly be used in Salvage and merits, possibly Dynamis:

    1. Should I build a full MND set for Chi Blast?

    2. Should I have a damage -% set (Arhat's head+1/body+1, Jelly ring) available, or will it mostly be a moot issue?

    3. With 0 H2H merits and the gear choices I have above, at 75 will I ever have the opportunity to eat meat, or should I stick with Sole?

    4. Is there ever a time I should not be using counterstance?

    1) Chi blasting is outdated these days - my advice is don't bother, unless your linkshell still lives in 2003.


    2) If you're tanking in salvage, it definitely helps to have an "oshi-" macro, especially on bosses. Mortal revolution comes to mind. Note that standard chariot TP moves (discharge and inertia stream) are funny in that counterstance does not increase the damage they do to you.


    3) In salvage on 1st and 2nd floors, you will almost never miss. Couerl subs all the way on those floors, and possibly higher, but you'll probably want sushi for the boss and possibly the floor beneath it. I always try to time it so I use 2 subs for the first 60 minutes, then a sushi for the last 30-40, but I have 8 h2h merits, so you might want to adjust that to 30-60 instead of 60-30.

    For Dynamis, I would avoid meat unless you're getting hunter's roll or madrigal, and even then only in cities. Outlands for monk is sushi only, unless you're 8/8 h2h, getting madrigals, and have a great accuracy setup (even then, I haven't tested it personally).

    Merits same as dynamis. You need madrigal to hope to get near capped accuracy without 8/8 h2h. Even with 8/8, HQ rings and PCC at bird camp without madrigals I have some trouble with accuracy when focus is down.


    4) Counterstance is a fickle mistress. Do not use counterstance if you're face-tanking for whatever reason (tanking multiple mobs, sac pulling) and the mob would otherwise do relatively little damage to you. i.e. counterstance can make mobs go from 50 to 250 damage.

    Also, in my opinion, do NOT use counterstance on the AR boss. Mortal + double attack = 1600+ damage with CStance on.

    That said, it works great on chariots, ramparts, most salvage mobs (when you have hi-pots, or a decent amount of mp to cure in the event of an unlucky counter streak).

    With merits it depends on MP and your setup, but you cannot counter Rushing Drub (or its similarly-named counterparts), or pecking flurry obviously, so use your discretion.

    *Note: all the above is the assumption with 5 counter merits, not sure if it's worth it at all without them.


    5) Nothing significant. If acc is near capped, the legs are nice for a counter set (at a decent loss of DoT and haste for utsusemi). The body adds a tiny bit to chakra (3 VIT), head is nice for chi blast if you decide to go that route, feet are good for gouging your eyes out with a spoon (evasion set?).

    Would disagree with not counterstancing, counterstance is the reason to lvl mnk... Shield block and counter's have completely fucked my ability to play nin ever again (with 50%+ chance of getting shadows up).

    Ninjutsu skill is supposed to lower chance of being interrupted right? I always wondered if macro'ing in a full skill set with max merits would work decently like shield.

    I really doubt it and all but don't think I've ever read of it being tested. Cap would be 324 with full merits and gear. 322 without antica ring which I've never heard of until I just looked it up, assuming it's a MMM drop.

    Why would Ninjitsu skill lower the chance of being interrupted? Enhancing skill doesn't lower your chance of being interrupted casting stoneskin...!

    It doesn't work nearly as well as shield, you're better off macroing in interruption down stuff.

    Bird you can eat meat, mamool you will be stuck to sole

    4. Is there ever a time I should not be using counterstance?

    Is there any AF worth upgrading to +1?
    Feet for Evasion setup Head/legs for chi blast hands is meh, and body is the best Chakra/howling fist body for MNK in my opinion

    Because SE has said it does, I am pretty sure.

    It's the reason my NIN can take 100 damage and finish casting but my MNK/NIN can't take 30.

    Get a Blood Ring! They are free and super-easy to get without the negative effects of the Sniper Ring. Seriously, everyone should have one.

    That is because almost all Chariot TP moves are magical damage in nature. Counterstance only effects physical defense.

    It is also how SAM/WAR tanking with Third Eye is viable (magic AOE doesn't wipe Third Eye).

    I always kept O kote, it tends to be better, and you should always eat sushi in lvl parties. Also spectacles are cheap if your aim is faith torque, at least better than chilvarous <sp>.
