JP -> NA basic auto-translation tool for FFXI?

Hi, for awhile now I've known that FFXIapp has had this tool. I'm not sure if it ever really worked since A. I don't use/support app, and B. I don't know anyone with it.

Is there a similar, clean, safe to use program similar to this? Or does this "auto translation tool" not even work. I don't care if it can't translate 30-40%/etc. of JP to NA. But It would help a ton in basic understanding.

edit: After some research, it seems app copy/pastes into google translator somehow automatically while reading the chatlogs. Kinda interesting, even if it isin't 100% accurate its a viable, and useful tool for us that can't speak or read Japanese.

Online translators like babelfish and google translate are absolutely 100% garbage. I haven't seen another tool like this, unfortunately, nor heard about one anywhere. I only knew of the one app had, and only because my friend was fucking around with it one day. He gave me some of the translations it gave and I couldn't understand anything that came out of it. The thing is the japanese tend to use a lot of abbreviations and ingame terms, sometimes a whole shout sentence will be in ingame terms, then there's no way for the translator to understand what is being said.

If Elmer hasn't made one yet, maybe I'll make a cheat-sheet for kanji/kana combinations that people can look at to see some of the more obvious phrases the japanese tend to say/shout...

well logger plugin is fairly close to real time, if someone could just make an autotranslater that pulls data off a text file would do the trick, and it wouldnt require any "hacking"

(just an idea) i blow at programming but at least understand some basic stuff

It would take a shit load of work to come up with an accurate translator at the click of a button. I'd love to see a team come up with one, it would be handy for all and it would make learning alot easier.

well as for a beta prog, doesnt have ot be accurate, straight babelfish is better then kanji

BableFish isn't bad untill you start getting complicated. i.e: I would like to go to a museum to see a Mummy. - I guarantee you will get a punch in the face from anyone, lol.

I usually copy/paste into google translator and I can usually make out what they're saying. To talk to them, I use only very simple sentences with the translator, I translate them to Japanese and then back to English, and if it still makes sense in English, it's probably fine in Japanese.

There's this tool people use for translating content from other Japanese (hentai) games, maybe it can be applied to FFXI. I have no experience with this tool however, found it off an anime forum.

I use LogMod for logging all chat as it is, and just today I was checking out its translation features. Unfortunately they aren't working at the moment, and I've posted about it in the thread there. I'm not sure if it's just me or what.

OtherWiki has a list of all the auto-translate phrases (link to table of contents) which might be of help to some people, especially with Job kanji.

I knew about that list but I'm willing to bet a lot of people didn't. Even so, it won't help very much when it comes down to most stuff outside auto-translate options: the Japanese don't care for auto-translate and usually go out of their way to avoid it (unless they're really desperate).

That's true - I just hope people with good memory for Kanji can glean something from it.

Scratch that, translation works fine... I was using 3.3 (Windower) and just had to upgrade to 3.41.

Yup, it works fine. Just wish it used excite instead of babelfish for internal translations ;
