I've seen a couple of ATI cards that are sound capable but people either say it works 100% or 0%. Anyone have any experience with a card in particular?

Mine doesn't, or can't, I dunno, but it's an HD 4890. It probably should be able to, but I just can't seem to get it to work.
HD4850 using DVI to HDMI cable, fully working sound.
This is in Windows XP, Vista and 7!
^same
This card to be exact. Came with a DVI > HDMI converter, although I'm sure a DVI > HDMI cabe will work just as well.
Just need ATI's HDMI Audio driver and it works great.
If it counts: HD3200 (780g's integrated graphics) sound works just fine through HDMI.
Doesnt it depend on your board to if you will get sound through an HDMI. I thought your card may support it but if the board doesnt you are SOL.
Hmm, that's interesting, so does it NEED a certain chipset to work?
My invoice says $159.99, and there was a rebate around $30 I think.
Here is an open box of that card. This card has the same specs except 1GB of memory rather than 512MB. You'd probably be ok with most HD series ATI cards to be honest. Just google the model# before you buy (or look through the newegg reviews) and look for anybody that says they have audio working and you'll know the card supports it.
I don't know if the motherboard has to support it, that may be worth looking into. I have this board and it definitely works for me. I think I read somewhere about certain cards needing an audio connection between the card and the board, but I don't have that and everything transfers just fine across the PCI slot.
