    Wireless N Router

Recently, my old linksys WRT54G has been acting up so I think it's about time to upgrade to a new router. I was reading a few articles on the differences between G and N and they claim that N has a much farther range and higher speeds. The range would be really nice as my xbox and room are several walls away from my router.

I'm here to ask for recommendations you guys may have for any new routers. There have been a lot of mixed reviews as far as wireless N goes and I'm wondering if its even worth it for what I need it for.

Just remember that you need wireless N adapters to go along with the N router. Neither are cheap. Personally I don't think it's worth it unless you desperately need the range.

If you have an older version of the WRT54g, consider flashing it with dd-wrt, an open source firmware that turns the router into a beast with a ton of features. Best of all it's more stable and free! Fairly easy to do too.

Sorry to add into this here. But i got on and looked up the wireless adapter and it doesn't cover wireless N? Unless there's something i missed. So fair warning excuse my ignorance on the subject.

Oh i've tried dd-wrt on my router and it worked great

Just after a few months with it, my router is starting to randomly drop signals all of sudden. I'm not sure if it is because I had it for a few years or if its because the temperature of the router is getting a little warmer.

If you're using Comcast, it is probably an issue with their modems and dd-wrt or even just linksys routers in general.

This was happening to me, I called them a few times and they finally came to the conclusion that my router was getting bad signals from the modem due to the firmware or possibly just the build of the router itself. After asking, they confirmed that it is a widespread problem.

I switched to my D-Link router (wireless N) and haven't had any problems since then. Great router, I miss DD-WRT though.

I have Time Warner and have only used my WRT54G so I honestly don't have anything to compare it to. I just know that after tweaking some specs with DD-WRT, my range and signal strength could be a little better.

Do you have a link to this DD-WRT? And does flashing just mean upgrading?

It can do, it can also mean taking other steps depending on what model of router you have. There are tutorials for almost all supported devices though.
