Gray line issue in Vista?

So I recently built my computer thanks to BG's help, but I'm running into an issue.

Occasionally and seemingly at random times, the computer screen locks up and -usually- displays gray lines, but sometimes it just goes black. The computer remains in this state until I turn it off, and when I check the event viewer after rebooting, I see nothing that tells me specifically why this happens.

I google'd the hell out of it but I'm having trouble finding out the source of the problem. One person said it could possibly be bad ram, but is there a way for me to check this before sending it back to newegg?

Have any extra PCI-E cards laying around to test to see if its a defective card?
