Looking for a better mkv player in Win7

So I had used one of the registry hacks to get WMP to play MKV files with subtitles in Windows 7, however I have run into a new problem. I recently downloaded some anime that has been encoded with both english and japanese audio and WMP plays both tracks at the same time. So I tried VLC and it seems to crash whenever you move the slider to select different parts of the video so I'm kind of at a loss here. Is there something that people use that actually works without random crashes?

Tried Media Player Classic Home Cinema?

I've run into that issue with crashing on seek, I think with VLC, but it was pretty specific to one group's encode of a particular anime, which didn't have two audio tracks.

I hate vlc, and avoid wmp as much as I can. I personally use media player classic home cinema, (google it as I can't post links yet ;p)

I'm using it on win7 and it works great, loads fast and haven't had it crash on me yet. I'm using CCCP with it to get the vob sub and haali media splitter to play mkv's IIRC.

Almost universally it seems I think people settle on CCCP w/Media Player Classic Home Cinema for anime and most other video. It is a codec pack but has largely avoided the "evil codec packs" label that most others get because it's fairly small and straight-forward as well as frequently updated. I switched to this option a few months ago and haven't had any playback problems at all, while having various problems including choppy playback with VLC.

lol. CoreAVC is a paid encoder but can decode h.264 a little quicker than ffdshow supposedly, but is also imperfect and causes artifacting for me so I'd ignore those suggestions in the image.

I originally used CCCP on XP before I upgraded my pc but I don't think this was an option for Windows 7 around summer time. I'll check that out again.

MPC HC plays most everything without CCCP as well, though it's also included as the default player for that package.

Ok so far CCCP with Media Player Home Cinema works flawlessly. Much thanks guys, really appreciate it.

Ok I guess one last question. Is there an option to default language to japanese if available with english subtitles? Or should I just change the track and subtitle each time I need to?

Try this, Avelle. When you open an anime file in MPC-HC you should have an icon for Haali Media Splitter in your system tray that has a little Omega symbol on it, at least that's what I think it is. lol Double clicking it will bring up the Haali menu, then click on the Options tab and open the "languages" tree. From here you can set language priority for both audio and subtitles by using their 3-letter language tag in the Value box separated by commas. An example would be:

    Audio Language priority: jpn, eng
    Subtitle language priority: eng, jpn

That tells Haali which to pick first when multiple audio and subtitle streams are available. I'm not sure of the syntax for the "Audio and Subtitle" box as it uses pairs, though, so I can only offer how to use the 2 separate values.

For some reason in this particular anime they included 2 sets of english subtitles, one is for the OP/ED, and the other is for the actual episode itself. It's defaulting to the first set of english subtitles but for this particular anime that isn't working because I need the second set. It's probably best to just set the default audio to japanese and I'll just select the proper subtitle each episode. Thanks for the help and sorry for the trouble!

Oh no problem, that actually sounds like somewhat of a weird incident so hopefully it's not something you'll have to deal with much. lol

It's a list that handles combinations rather than individual audio or subtitle tracks. Here's mine: jpn, jpn;jpn, eng;eng, off . That means...

    1) Japanese audio with Japanese subtitles
    2) Japanese audio with English subtitles
    3) English audio with no subtitles

I have JPN,JPN as the first because a certain dual-audio release group names their subtitle tracks based on which audio track they're supposed to go with rather than the language of the subtitle track. It's not necessary unless you watch similarly badly-muxed releases.

    JetAudio!

I'll toss a recommendation of JetAudio. Best media player I've personally used. I've used MPC, VLC, Foobar, Winamp etc etc and this is the best one for me personally. It is pay software, but it has a free version, and there is always the other route... The full version contains some great sound enhancement plugins that make music just sound so much better though. EQ tweaks+BBE @max+BBE Viva @25%+X Bass (if you can do it without distorting your speakers) = perfect sounding audio to my ears. It's got tons of tweaks and settings and has it's own decoders for most file types so you don't even need a codec pack with it (at least for a majority of files). Give it a shot!

Edit: As for the dual language anime question I run all my anime in JetAudio, and I have some dual audio shows like my Yu Yu Hakusho rips, and when the show is dual audio it will have a context menu option when you right click the video pane or the tray icon that says "Audio tracks" or something which expands out and has each audio track that is available. Simply click which one you want, and it will switch instantly. Or you can do a keyboard shortcut to switch them effortlessly. I don't remember what it is just look on the menu and it will show you.

You can also set subtitles to always load up, and set your preference for which subtitles load in what order. Also, I've never had JetAudio crash unless the whole PC crashed if that helps.

Thanks for the explanation. What an odd way to name subtitles, though. lol

Seconding this. I've only used the free version of jetaudio, but it has been pretty great for me.

Windows Media Player Classic has always been my favourite choice. Sometimes though when watching anime you get the weirdest file extensions. K-lite has the codecs for pretty much any media file imaginable. It also comes with Real Alternative if you aren't a fan of real player.

What's wrong with VLC? Multi-platform, open source software means that it will always work with newer codecs and is never outdated, it also works great as an encoder for DLNA streaming...
