Still feels too early for a PS4 announcement to me, and same with 360 after all Microsoft is trying to cram into their Live! service.
"Don't buy it now, wait for the new system!" is probably something both of them don't want to put in people's minds after spending years getting these consoles outside of money-bleeding territory.
obligatory; Hold up, I just got the RROD, let me go get the Next-Box.
TBH, I'm getting tired of getting a new console ever 6 years. If they announce it this year, it still wouldn't be out until 2013~'14 anywyas.
Way too soon. Both consoles make beautiful games. Definitely not buuying at launch whatever it is.
They might announce that it's in development, but you're right, given the 10 year cycles, the consoles won't be out til 2013-2014 anyway. Either way, it sounds like something to look forward to. I didn't expect Sony to make an announcement, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Microsoft unveiling something this year.
Edit: I might be able to find out more tomorrow. I know a guy who does network security for Microsoft and the entertainment industry.
This can't come soon enough, I'm so tired of having games still being developed for DirectX 9 because god forbid they don't release something on the Xbox.
^ Buy a PC; enjoy DX11. By the time some new console came out with their DX11, PCs will already be utilizing DX14+.
You completely misinterpreted what he was saying.
Yeah I mean, what are the new consoles going to bring that is new to the table? I think we're hitting the point where graphics are advanced enough to look decent, anything more would take a lot of man hours to create at least with our current tools. I think the most we would see is better physics and fluid simulations, and probably better lighting tech. I don't think consumers will want to spend $500-600 on a new console if there isn't some big differences between the two.
One thing you can bet your ass on is a full fledged multimedia center with social integration, and a more responsive marketplace/store. Hopefully they will open up their systems for apps and indie games. Microsoft and Sony are both dropping the ball when it comes to that kind of stuff.
Edit: I'm exhausted as fuck and I have a case of the dumb-fingers so if none of this shit makes sense, my bad.
Or they could just use Blu-Ray and do away with DVD.
If I had to guess, they would both just have better internet browsers.
For Facebook and Youtube, and each would have seperate game distributors like Steam.
You get to buy/download DLC, so why not just download the game to console the day it comes out eh?
Mainly because they are 10-30 gigs for some games.... with current internet caps makes it not economical and of course the 12 hour wait for the download probably would not help either.
I am almost certain they will announce the consoles this year at E3 (in an attempt to hinder the Wii-U's sales.... you always see this happen in an attempt to make people realize that their consoles are coming, and many people make the choice of 1 console per every few years.) I'd like to see them announce some of the idealized features of the consoles too. Would not be too far fetched to say "Will support DX11" or the cpu architecture at this point. They have been under development for a few years now. I know some of the DEV's have said they have some specs they have been told, and many have been developing games for those said specs. (Which is why when a console initially launches all the games don't really use more than half of what the console is capable of. They start development before the console(s) are finalized and have to account for some reductions in ram/video)
I'm excited to hear about them, but know they won't be coming until mid-end 2013 in all likelihood.
I would really like to see Microsoft man up and start using Blurays. It is getting old fast when multiplatform games have to be super linear and unable to "revisit" things because they are broken up in multiple DVD's (See FFXIII)
Just because they are showing a new system this E3 doesn't mean its coming out now. Can still be 1+ years away
You'd think game companies would be more gung ho about downloadable games, it gives them more control over piracy, eliminates the sale of used games, and saves a ton of money in production and distribution of physical media.
