My First and last build... Help please

Like everyone else I'm decided on building a system for FFXIV and beyond. I researched how to put stuff together and followed directions to a T. So Today I finally get everything worked out and in place and I go to power it up and the LED lights on the MB turn on as expected. I go to hit the power up button and everything turns on for literally one second, maybe less and then it stops. The Led lights on the MB are still on however. I can not get my system running, so any ideas what i should do next. I am rechecking all connections as we speak. I am gonna hit up evga first thing tomorow, but I wanted to see if anyone might know a reason this is going on? make sure you connected the 8 pin power connector, it's sorta by the cpu slot. other thing to check is you have the power/reset pins plugged in correctly.

Yea, what chiyio said. After building many computers, the 8 pin always gets me. Or its the 4-pin. Regardless, check and make sure your MB is properly powered. Its odd that it turns off immediately. Check your ram slots, make sure they are properly installed or supported, also check your video card and power for it as well. All you want at this point is for it to POST

1. Make sure if your GPU is getting enough power, some actually take 2 connectors to fully power up.
2. Re-check 8 pin connector
3. PSU big enough?
4. Punch it

Is there any error code displayed on the board's digital readout? If not, start with what Chiyio said (8-pin CPU power connector), then check the memory sticks one-by-one to see if one of them is bad (Slot 1 is the grey slot closest to the CPU socket).

BTW it looks like you've got an open box unit there. There's always a chance that it's just a bad board, but Newegg usually checks stuff out when it's RMA'd so I doubt that's the problem.

You did you standoffs (little brass screw like things) between the case and the motherboard right? You'd be shocked how many don't and the mobo is shorting.

your mobo isn't touching the case, right? if its touching any metal it will do that. PSU can also be DoA. They can power stuff up but crash when under any load. Happened to me a few times. But again, check your mobo and thats its not touching any metal

Could be anything really, from a short-circuit to a DoA piece or something even more stupid (I end up fighting with most motherboards to get them to boot the first time, sometimes need to change RAM sockets, or randomly retarded stuff)

Do your fans (Graphic card especially) go full speed at boot for a few seconds then get to their real speed? That's what I understood in your message and that's a perfectly normal boot procedure.

Pictures / Full hardware list might help us answering as well!

Check the instructions to see which slots the ram goes into, on my board they were labeled A2 A1 B2 B1 C2 C1, and you had to use the 1 slots. The 8 pin on mine had a cover over 4 of the holes so check to see if that happened to you, I had to remove the cover first, otherwise you'd only be putting it in 4 pins.

So my rig is: Antec 902 case, I7 950, above MB New not open box, 6 GB (3x2) Corsair Dominators, GTX 460, 750w Corsair PSU, Hyper 212 heat sink.

I have checked all the connections they are OK and in appropriate slots, as is the RAM. I used the provided mounting screws and the little cloth washers, also to mount the Hyper 212 I had to mod the case, but that was done with everything out of the case. It does not turn on for a few seconds it, turns on for less than 1 second, the case fans and LED's. Is there a way to test the PSU to eliminate or confirm that its that? I am getting 2/3 LED's on the MB to come on, the blue ( "When system is in standby mode: this LED is on. This LED will remain on as long as the MB is receiving constant power") and Yellow ( "When the memory slot is functional"). I am not getting Green ( " When the system is powered on, this LED is on") to turn on tho. Also, their is no metal touching the MB at all, so that's where I stand so far. Any input is greatly appreciated. I can post pictured but it will be in a few hours. Thanks again

Remove the CPU 4(or 8) pins, the motherboard 958490489 pins, leave HDD and graphic card and fans plugged in to your PSU then with a wire make a bridge on the motherboard (PSU side) pins between the green wire (you'll find it easily, only one) and the black wire to the left, then proceed to turn on the the PSU back switch

This will simulate a motherboard boot and give power to the devices, not full load but still a good test.

I'm having a similar problem... I just built my PC today, and everything seems to be plugged in correctly, but when I boot it up only the blue light saying there is power in the front of my case lights up, as well as a "CLR SMOS" light in the back. Aside from that, nothing works.
I've spent a few hours now just trying to see if I plugged something in wrong. I'm kinda just lost now. Could something have been DoA, or did I probably fuck up somewhere?

I don't know if it matters, I just built my first computer the other day so don't have all the experience, but with that motherboard and processor I thought you had to use triple channel memory, the memory you have is dual channel. I don't know if that will affect it from starting though. Did you try booting up with only 1 stick of ram in? Did you use the standoffs that came with the case so the motherboard isn't touching it? Also did you make sure the 8 pin connector is plugged in and didn't only plug in 4 of the pins?

I see the tripple channel memory for the motherboard, but where do you see it in the processor?
I did try booting with 1 RAM, but it still does absolutely nothing. No fans, just a light turns on.

And I checked the 8-pin connector over and over, and I'm 99% sure that it's the correct one (There's only 1 8-pin)

It could be the power supply then, do you have another one you could swap out and try? I don't have that type of motherboard, but I google'd the type of problem you were having and found this thread:

Can try reading through that to see if anything helps you. Could either be a faulty board or power supply.

From what I read there they suggested to make sure ram was in white slots, make sure 8 pin and 24 pin were connected, no bent pins on the processor. They also said to take the board out of the case and put it on cardboard or wooden table to see if you can get it to start.

I'll have to try to see if I can get it to work the way they are (try a different power, or RAM) or I'm probably just going to have to bring it back unfortunately.
This setup is frustrating. I have a feeling it may just be the Gigabyte brand?

the motherboard and cpu sorta go hand in hand, but is only going to be said as reqs with the motherboard, because you won't be able to put an i7 lga 1366 into the dual channel motherboard, lga 1156. like robbb said, idk if that'll affect the system from booting up though, if you just stick one in.

In my personal experience with this specific issue, it has always ended up being a fried or DoA power supply giving me these symptoms. But it could be almost anything. Reseat everything, double check all power connectors. Eliminate all unnecessary peripherals, and then begin swapping in different ram/graphics card/processor if you have one. If none of those work, its probably either a bad power supply and/or motherboard.
