Will price of the cables reflect in the quality?

I bought a few 10 dollar cables off of Newegg for my Xbox and PS3 recently, and now I have my friend calling me a retard for not buying monster. Now I've read articles that try to persuade you towards one side or the other, but now I'd like some real human feedback.

What is your opinion?

hdmi is digital, so it either works perfectly, or not at all, with extremely little in between. You got ripped off, actually. The last hdmi cable i bought ran me $2.40 with free shipping, from amazon. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_effect

Probably in some way, but not with regards to picture. HDMI is digital. Think of it like an MP3 file. You don't magically get a better quality MP3 because you downloaded it over FIOS, right? It doesn't get degraded if you don't use an extra beefy gold-plated USB cable to copy it to your iPod or external HDD. Either you transfer the complete file, or you don't. Same thing with HDMI. A bad cable/connector may result in dropped data, resulting in problems with the image, but if that's not happening, then you have 100% of the quality.

There are considerations - very long cable runs (like, if you're running to a projector in the back of the room) apparently benefit from heavier gauge cables. That's no different than basically any other cabling. Everything has a maximum distance before signal strength degrades.

You also want to avoid overly stiff cables if they might put pressure on the HDMI port.


Most problems with HDMI aren't due to the cable itself anyway, but more often due to the stupid HDCP DRM measures.

Eh, I think there's a difference between getting suckered into the Monster Cable pitch, and splitting hairs over a dollar or three. Amazon has cheap cables, Newegg does, plenty of online places do. Shipping varies - Monoprice has it, others may not (not all cables on Newegg have shipping fees, for example). Once it gets under $10 or so, I just don't really care. It's not like I need to buy cables every week.

In-store...sure...too often you see cables for $20-30 that'd be 1/10 of that online. It still might be worth the extra cash to have it same-day...but again, you're not talking about dropping $80-90+ on a cable. An extra $10 or something is probably what express shipping would run.

Of course, the bigger lesson to learn there is...buy extra cables when you do place a Monoprice (or whatever) order. That way you don't get tempted to buy them for high markup.

Sorry to Hijack the thread but i got question about the HDMI cable too. I went on Monoprice and look for HDMI cable but I see there are bunch of different kinds like [28/26 AWG HighSpeed; Preminum 24 AWG HighSpeed/Standard Speed/Flat...Male to Females]...Whats the differences between the # in AWG and High Speed / Standard Speed ? Which one should I get?? I'm a bit confuse Monoprice

For general usage, none of that matters. If you need something longer than 5m or so, it may or may not matter. Under 5m, the only thing that matters is price.
