    Comparing jobs by budgeting.

I have an interview for a different job that I have a very large chance of getting. It pays more than my current job but it means I have to move to the Renton, WA area (About two hours south of where I currently live).

Right now I still live with my parents so I'm getting a pretty good deal on... Everything really, I pay rent but not very much. My biggest expense right now is my car payments. However if I take the job/move out my expenses will increase dramatically.

This is where my net income stands currently:
$1,593.60 per month (Only after taxes)
This is where my net income stands if I get the new job:
$3,522.00 per month (Only after taxes) (This includes an estimated mileage of 150/day at .51 per mile. Math: 150*.51*20=1,530.00, 1,992.00+1,530.00= 3,522.00)

Right now in my current situation that is a lot. But after I start budgeting:
    Current:
    Car: 600/month
    Phone: 95/month
    Rent: 300/month
    Insurance: 40/month
Car Insurance: Lumped in with rent
Fuel: 72/month (If I were to only drive too and from work)
    Groceries: Included in rent
    Electricity: Included in rent

    Total Expenses: 1,107.00

    Budgeted if I get/accept job:
    Car: 600/month
    Phone: 95/month
    Rent: 1,000/month
    Insurance: 50/month
    Car Insurance: 200/month
Fuel: 540/month (Only 150 miles per day)
    Groceries: 300/month
    Electricity: 120/month

    Total Expenses: 2,905.00

    Current leftovers:
    486.60

    If I accept the job
    617.00

After putting 20% into savings like a good boy
    Current
    389.28

    If I get/accept the job:
    493.60

I have a feeling I'm missing a few things in my budget but I have no fucking clue as to what.

Can anyone give me hints and tips?

Really the reason I'm paying that much is because its a "loan" through a family member that has 0 interest. I want to get it off of my plate. I'm sure if I had to I could ask the person I'm paying back if I can pay less.

I'm not sure there's much of a tip other than you seem to have it covered. The only "wow" is what the guy above me said ... $600/mo on a car? Jeebus.

And just so you know, I had to do similar calculations in 2006, moving from an area with $400/mo rent (Northeast PA) ... to working in an area with $1000-$1200/mo rent (South of Baltimore, MD). Even though at the time I was getting a 150% raise in raw numbers, like in your case it was more like 2-5% tops after factoring cost of living. In the end I took the job, but instead opted to move to an area north of Baltimore and drive 40-45 minutes each way to and from work to instead land a $650/mo rent. Of course that rent is $800/mo now while where I work is still around $1000-$1200/mo ... so the gap is closing ... although I bought a hybrid 3 years ago which is really making my 45 min drive only use the same gas as other employees 10-20 min drives.

    "only 150 miles a day"?

    wat?

What kind of car did you buy, and why in the hell are you driving a new car that far? Buy a $3,000 civic to use as a daily driver or something lol

I get paid for mileage at the new job.

Worth noting, the reason I have a shot at the job: I'm willing to relocate closer to the territory.

I'm not really sure what advice you're looking for. If you're netting higher income even with moving out of your parents place after taking the new job, then I can't really see much of a debate of what you should do.

    Ah ok.

Will your rent in some town in WA i've never heard of really going to be 1k/mo.?

I've lived in Milwaukee, Miami, and LA for the past 9 years and never paid more than $800/mo. Housing is plentiful nearly everywhere in America - you can go cheaper.

And $200/mo for car insurance? Really?

Anyway, still definitely do it. If you can move out, be independent, have your own place, and still have more money than before, you do it.

Paying back a loan asap is commendable, but the beauty of zero interest is, well, zero interest. If the creditor doesn't mind a lower payment, I'd welcome their generosity.

There's plenty of housing in SF that isn't $2200/mo too. That's a nice mortgage man - you're paying that just for yourself?

    Sounds dumb.

$2200/mo is pretty damn good for a 2-bedroom, private backyard garden, pet-friendly, top-story apartment (with a washer/dryer in-unit) for any non-shitty area of SF (Glen Park). It's being split down the middle.

Oh, believe me, I spent a long time looking at more affordable places in the city... but this was always across the street/nextdoor:

I have too much valuable computer/photographic equipment I have to haul back and forth to fuck around with bad neighborhoods... not to mention pay to insure.

I said it was a $2200/mo apartment, not that I was living alone and paying $2200 a month just for my rent, you fucking winner.
