    Airline baggage

Grandma's flying me up to CA again at the end of July.

I usually fly southwest because I know they have free bag checking, but now they've raised their prices. Cheapest flight I see is $239 (after taxes/fees) vs $189 that I'm finding elsewhere.

That being said, anyone have any experience w/ pricing on different airlines? Like on American Airlines I can only find what you can bring in your bags and the rules, but nothing on the price.

How long you staying? I'd recommend bringing carry on instead, I don't trust airlines with my baggage after spending a day in atlanta's airport because they canceled my connecting flight, lost my luggage in the meantime, and didn't have any cars for me to rent. Spent 14 hours there while they searched for my luggage, and had to have the gf drive from NC to pick me up.

Most airlines that I have flown you get 1 carryon plus on personal item. Then checked baggage (the big shit) is $25 a bag

Southwest didn't raise their prices, you're just trying to book a flight that is less than 8 weeks out which means they're automatically going to charge you a premium. I just booked a flight today for $120 but it's not flying until the end of August.

Some airlines allow laptop bags as a "personal item" so you could buy a really big laptop bag and stuff a bunch of stuff in that.

lol well they raised it for short term then. I've always got tickets about a month in advance for the past few years and they were still the cheapest as compared to other airlines, lol.

You can take a small suitcase as a carry-on (less than 22"), plus a backpack, laptop bag, etc.

I can easily pack a week's worth of clothes into a carry-on, put anything else i need in the backpack. If you're staying for more than a week, you can do laundry.

In other words, checked bags are for suckers and people on international flights.

Might as well pay for the extra luggage instead of using FedEx.

I'd check the website and see the dimensions accepted for carry on luggage. I used to see a lot of people bring the bare maximum for carry on, plus a backpack they'd use for "personal" use. It gets pretty annoying when they're trying to shove all that shit overhead or under the seat, but I can't blame them when round trip luggage fees are like 50 bucks for most airlines.

For only 14 days, I'd bring a carry on bag and forget checking shit in. Bring 5 or 6 days worth of clothes, reuse a couple of jeans a few times, and wash your shit (better then you wash your food bowls...). Use the money you'd save on bus fair or something.

Be careful. They charge an additional $25.00 per dirty cooking utensil/or bowl in any checked baggage now.

Currently Spirit Airlines is the only one doing it, but they charge $45 per carry on bag along with charging for checked baggage and they just started charging $5 to print out your boarding pass at the counter and $1 to print it at the kiosk. Except to see the carry on bag charge expand to other airlines, especially the low cost carriers. Speaking of Southwest raising their rates, they have to as their fuel hedging is about to run out and they have started losing ground in certain markets.

Re: tons of shit, I would never ever send anything on an airplane that I care deeply about. FedEx that shit with insurance. If something happens, at least you can get the value of it back in a timely fashion...airlines will drag their feet (if they're even liable at all).
