    Dragon Ball Z Ultimate Tenkaichi

I would say 'Another year, another dragonball game' but, it's not the cod/madden case just yet.

The trailer was released 11th May 2011 along with the second scan of the game. According to the advertisement, the game will include graphics that are faithful to the manga, destructible battlefields, along with design and controls aimed to bring a much closer experience to the Tenkaichi series.
And while I'm at it. THIS is the DBZ game we need on consoles. It's arcade only in Japan.

Its the Tenkaichi fighting engine upgraded, essentially, with a few new angles thrown in and a lot of visual work done. The mouths still move the same (no lip tracking). Many of the animations are still the same (Base Vegeta's "default" combo still looks the same, complete with upside down kick to finish it), and I've already spotted 2 of the exact same "specials" (Gohan's ultra is the same combo with now new angles and Goku's Kaiyoken is simply far more red than it was before, but same angles).

I'd put it in the madden box, and I'm a fan that gets it every year, but it is what it is. They need to bring out that 4-way DBZ game that's out in the arcades in Japan, or they need to style a multiplayer DBZ in the line of Legends for the PSX (THAT was a fucking game). I like the Tenkaichi series, but once you've seen the animations once, you've seen them a million times.

Is this still the same line of games as the Budokai ones? I haven't played a DBZ game since Budokai 2, it wasn't particularly deep but pretty fun, wondering how this would compare.

Also wondering if this one is a good one to buy.

Havent played a DBZ game in several years, but they are pretty fun.

Id like to play one with a full roster that has the most sayian transgressions as possible. These tend to go in to GT characters to, dont they?

Nah the Budokai to Burst Limit games were like your typical fighter. The Tenkaichi off branch has always been flying around and spamming attacks when you could. The Tenkaichi games on ps2 were more in your face fights than spamming. Sadly Raging Blast 1 & 2 relied more on attack spam than actual fighting.

Glad to see they're finally at the point where they can begin to push the PS3, graphic and framerate-wise. It's only been forever. From the looks of it, they've been taking notes from the Naruto Storm series and finally from what fans have been crying for for years. I'm seeing quick time events for both obvious story battles and possibly even for standard vs. matches, there's finally wind effects for more than just a few blocky chunks of hair, they've included the rare follow ups (ping-pong attack, ect.) more commonly now, the environments are far more destructible, and it looks like they've wisely chosen to mask the load times for all of this by means of a few stock moments of the attacked character reeling in pain. I think its pretty smart if it allows for far better graphics and freedom while actually fighting.

Edit: What I don't like is the obvious marketing ploy of releasing 3 of each game, always in the order of Freiza, Cell, then Buu. If you can pack it all into one game, fucking do it. Also, make sure my Future Gohan is in and we're cool.

"In Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Tenkaichi prepare to dive into the world of the Dragon Ball manga, TV anime, films and video games head first, with brand new content and game play, a comprehensive character line up and faithful manga style graphics.
Development team Spike Co. Ltd. in Japan, the talented people responsible for sustaining the incredible worldwide success of the franchise over the past 6 years, have taken a new approach this time round, with the aim of creating a new landmark in the Dragon Ball videogame series. They've poured all their ki energy into upgrading the character and environment graphics, with character designs drawn straight from the original DBZ manga series, and totally destructible battle fields, including realistic craters and Kamehameha tracers cutting across the sky, delivering a heightened sensation of realism and dynamic immediacy.
Featuring the original Japanese voiceover and music, the enhanced story mode will immerse players in the rich variety of the Dragon Ball universe, where every element of the battle will thrill. The game will also include a special mode which allows the player to experience the brand new age of Dragon Ball Z. The controls are being designed to bring the experience closer to the previous Tenkaichi series, making the play accessible to all, but retaining all the tactical depth in battle."

    Just some early observations

    Likes:
-Extra intro fluff with the teleport attacks
-Quick time events (nice to switch things up a bit, and us combo-whores had our fun with the previous game's crazy combo-chaining system)
-Looks like a combination of BT and Final Bout with the focus on being able to counter everything through quick time events
    -Slightly more destructible arenas

    Dislikes:
-Same canned intro speech/animations as last year's
-Lip-synching is still not anywhere near a priority (for any region's VAing)
-The quick-time-event craze (something new but why so many?!)
-Grating VA drowns out the combat (getting tired of NA Goku's "whoooaaa!!"'s after getting hit after hearing it since Budokai for the PS2.
-Hard to see how the game will be skill-oriented when there's so much quick-time; looks more rock-paper-scissors than actual skill - will probably lead to a lot of "you aren't more skilled than me, you're just luckier!"
-Still not enough arena destruction for a PS3 title this far into the console's lifespan. Companies should be pressing the limits of the console, not scratching the surface.
-Scrubs always playing it for the demos so we can never see the depth of the combo system; I saw Goku and Trunks using the same goddamn base strings that they had in the first BT for the PS2 as the default melee. While we always see this whenever a new BT game comes out (due to the aforementioned scrubs apparently never playing the previous titles - the controls never change so much that you can't do a series of follow-ups or even a cancel), its becoming extremely distressing as a fan of the genre to see the same. old. starter. combo. again. and. again.
