Major Appliances - Spend more = better?

I just bought a new house and I need to purchase appliances. I honestly have no clue what to look for and frankly it's kinda frustrating. Our builder has a stainless steel appliance package made by general electric for $3600(cad) and it includes everything (washer, dryer, dishwasher, fridge, stove). From what everyone has told me is that this is a pretty good deal but with boxing week coming up I'm wondering if I should just wait it out.

Also, what exactly do you look for when buying these appliances? Do brands matter? I really can only afford the $3600 at most, but I would love if I could get that down to $3000.

This is something you research before buying a house.

Reasons being? I spent most of my waking life researching about purchasing a home, sorry for trying to catch up.

*edit* I can likely live without appliances for a month or so which is why I'm putting the research off until now

Go to Lowes, see what you like, add up the costs? Obviously a $500 fridge is not going to be anywhere near as nice as a $1500, but it really depends on what your standards are.

My mother bought a new house, got stainless steel appliances for 2200 for kitchen, and 600 for washing machine/dryer

she had me install them, so there was no fee there. but installation can run you, I dunno, 300 bucks?

Whirlpool is generally a good brand.
Kenmore if yorue on a budget.

Just do a break down of initial cost and how much they cost per month, and see how it looks that way.
Up to you if you want to spend 500$ more up front and save some money over time.

If you like cooking, pay more for nicer (you get what you pay for). If you don't like cooking and only want to be able to refrigerate your shit and nuke things occasionally, you can get away with el-cheapo stuff for like $1500.

I like cooking, and ended up with midrange stuff. I got a GE profile gas range (<3 gas; convection oven, 5 burner, warming drawer), a kenmoore fridge (double-door fridge up top, freezer drawer on bottom), some brand of dishwasher that my wife liked, and a panasonic microwave.

Do you have to get washer/dryer in your 3k?

I got all my shit at sears. I went to Lowes, got then to write down some prices. Went to HHGregg, got them to pricematch and drop a few hundred. Went to sears and had them pricematch Gregg and give a few hundred more. We also used their "no interest for 12 month".

    Protip: Whirlpool makes Kenmore.

I can answer any appliance question you might have, as I used to sell them for 4-5 years.

GE isn't bad, it's probably the best as far as energy ratings go... as for the package deal... I need to know what makes of appliances you are getting. Type makes a difference (ie, ceramic stove vs coil, three-door fridge vs. two).

the package I quoted has a ceramic stove top, and 2 door fridge with a drawer freezer. is ceramic stove better than coil? All I've been hearing are stories about the top breaking or something bs like that?

If you're a dipshit and cook with cast iron and don't know how to use them yes I suppose they do suck. Ceramic tops are much easier to clean and maintain if you're not an utter retard. They're just more expensive to replace.

The fridge has three doors or two?

    What about the dishwasher?

Think I've sold literally hundreds of ceramic tops and never once heard horror stories of breaking them. Only hearsay.

Beyond kurono's advice, I had a discussion with Ksandra recently about the brand name unimportance that he's already alluded to, along with other general information about appliance buying:

    http://www.bluegartr.com/threads/107...=1#post4901383

That conversation was more about refrigerators than anything else, and eventually touched on a few things, like the pluses and cons of top and bottom freezers.

I originally recommended Lowe's therein, but considering their recent idiocy involving the Muslim reality show, I'm all for Home Depot. I've shopped at both, and neither have disappointed me.

Also, it's possible to stay under $3000 and get decent appliances. Get a dishwasher with a built-in food processor for about $400, three-door for about $1200, ceramic-top for about $600, and if you want the MHC you can buy one for about $200 because everything beyond that is bullshit.

Brand-wise doesn't matter. Personally, if you want stainless, I would buy something NOT made by Whirlpool. LG, GE, or Samsung ftw (or off-brand Hotpoint).

P.S. Whirlpool is shit now. Also stay away from all other Whirlpool-made brands except for Maytag/Amana. That includes Kitchenaid (although their small appliances are good) and Admiral. Frigidaire/Bosch make decent kitchen appliances but you pay money for the name.

It's too bad Amana isn't as great as it used to be. I've made it a point to purchase Amana appliances manufactured before 1997, including my beloved Radarange RR-9, which I've had for a number of years now.

I don't expect everyone else to be as invested in appliance quality as I am, though.

I absolutely appreciate appliance quality, as it has significantly decreased since the advent of variable-speed compressors and direct drive.

I'm all for not supporting Lowe's because of the Muslim thing. However Home Depot is arguably worse. The Home Depot PAC gave almost double to republicans (most of them the homophobic, racist, sexist, or or otherwise bigoted variety). I try to shop local whenever I can, and when I can't, you just have to try to pick the lesser of 2 evils.

    Don't buy GE.

I just bought Samsung washer and Dryer from black friday sale for 1/2 off. It really depends on what you want how much everything will cost. Do you want to be able to resell or are you just trying to fill the spots? How large of a fridge do you want? What style? There's a lot that goes into buying and we need to know what you want before we can really send you in the right direction.

Home Depot is a much more progressive company, and I don't know where you pulled that "almost double" estimate from, but I'm not seeing it, and I'm looking back over the past decade's worth of donations. Maybe you're adding up the surplus over multiple years rather than looking at one year, but they don't appear to blatantly lean in one direction. I've only found one article that says they do, but it makes the perfectly valid point of stating that there are Democrats against gay rights too, which is all too true. Besides that, I personally think that anyone who makes blanket statements about either party isn't someone worth listening to, even though I consider myself liberal (and certainly not a Democrat).

Home Depot supports LGBT causes, encourages equality in the workplace, and provides a lot of community services. It's very difficult, in fact, to find terrible things they've done, as there are a lot of positives. Lowe's has been a whipping boy of conservatives for a lot longer than this recent Muslim reality show debacle has let on, and if I'd known that sooner, I wouldn't have shopped there when I did. Fortunately, I've given Home Depot my business far more often, so I can feel good about that, at least.

Also, you may want to ask a lot of those independent business owners what party they're in. They may all be homophobic, racist, sexist, or otherwise bigoted Republicans.

Good rule to live by is that generally you get what you pay for. Something that's more expensive (NORMALLY, not at places that overcharge, and there are a lot of places like that when appliances are concerned I'm guessing) will probably last longer/need fewer repairs and treat you better than something cheap. Of course, there are exceptions. If you're looking for a microwave though ended up getting this Danby one myself and it's been fucking awesome so far, despite being cheaper than almost any other microwave I looked at.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Just to throw it out there but to refer to the thread kohan linked I always recommend checking your local BB before buying anything to see their open-boxed items. People will return things for the most retarded reasons. There was a fridge I really wanted (but sadly wouldn't fit ;_; ) that was returned because of this LITTLE FUCKING TINY ASS DENT in the bottom grate that would take a mouse to notice. And they knocked off like $300 on the price iirc.

Of course some shit is too dented/scraped to be worth it, but I saw a lot of items that were similar to the above where people just return stuff for the most random reasons. (one was dented in the back...like people see that part of your fridge..). I like good deals though so you might not be the same and want something perfect.
