We finally have confirmation of a new .hack game. Famitsu this week reveals that a new game in the franchise is in development.

The magazine lists the game under the placeholder name of just .hack. Platform and release date are both to be announced. However, the magazine does have some screenshots that show a high level of detail. In an interview, CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama reveals that the screenshots are all real time from the game.

Matsuyama notes in the interview that different from .hack//G.U. and .hack//Link, which had an anime style to their visuals, the new game has a bit more photo realism.

The screens appear to show Haseyo, main character of .hack//GU. Matsuyama would confirm that it is Haseyo, but when Famitsu asked if it's "that Haseyo," he would only say "I can't say yet."

The new game project began planning at around the time of the .hack movie, Matsuyama also told the magazine. It appears that the two will be related, as the game takes place in 2025, one year after the events of the movie.

Official details on the game will be released quickly following the movie's release. The movie is set to hit theaters on January 21.

I don't... what? So is the game gonna be taking place in v1 of The World? And I don't recall AIDA being part of that. I haven't played any of the .hacks in a while. I've watched all the anime aside from Twilight Bracelet. (or whatever that was called) Am I missing something here?

Never played the original series and always regretted it because I admired what they were trying to do. I might pick this one up to show my support if the concepts remain the same.

I played the first series but never finished Part 4 because of all the inane grinding you had to do just to get access to the various dungeons. Farming those data cores or whatever they were just got tiresome.

There was a JP MMO for the game at some point. Idk if its still active. Option for like 4 player open world/questing etc would be awesome.

beat the 7 games and gu was by far the best , but the first 4 had an awsome concept I mean an mmo where you fight glitches would be dope. I would love data drain in like ffxi or something

seriously ruined the game for me. the first 3 were fucking awesome, i dont even remember them but i remember that they were awesome. and then #4 came out and i was like YES THE STUNNIGN CONCLUWHAT THE FUCK I NEED 25 A VIRUS CORES HOW THE FUCK I 1 SHOT EVERYTHING THIS DOESNT MAKE SENSE

played the first two of the series loved them, can't remember why I didn't by the other two though I think I was a poor college kid at the time. dunno if I can get into them again though. Easier then because there were few actual mmos to get into (and time for). This will probably just make me want to go play the tentacle porn mmo some more (SWTOR).

Also watching Haseo beat the crap out of enemies, then subsequently get his ass kicked by Tri Edge was awesome.

G.U., while repetitive at times, was such a huge freaking improvement over the previous. Each part was a first day buy for me.

If you opted to get them in the first game, though, Doppleganger weapons broke the game beyond belief.

I played through the first two games and loved it, and quit halfway through the third because my peoples started selling the armor I gave them that had buff things on it so that we could start boss battles with every buff that we needed. I loved the story and I'm very sad that I wasn't able to finish it. D:

Only anime version I've watched to completion is //sign. I should probably dl and watch all the other versions.
