    Modems?

Tired of paying this modem rental fee from my ISP, so was looking to purchase one.

If I were to get the exact same one I'm renting, I'd only pay 20-30 bucks. That said, I've seen some expensive modems, so what's so good about the expensive ones? What makes them cost that much more?

If I'm not having trouble with my internet now, would it be sufficient to just get the identical model?

Basically the higher the bandwith (down/up speeds) it can handle, the more expensive it is. I'm assuming you have cable. I spent 90 for mine which can handle 300mb down.

http://www.amazon.com/ARRIS-SURFboar...rfboard+sb6141 is what I got and it works great.

I'm rocking the Surfboard 6121. Got it on sale for around $40. For my needs it's great. Been using it for two years so it's already paid for itself and then some.

^ I use the same thing. Works great. There is a model higher that offers wireless too if you're interested in that and don't have a router.

Any opinion on this one/ Looks the same spec wise as the sb6141; but like half the price (used one in very good condition from seller w/ good ratings for 33 bucks)

The one Melena posted is a junior version of this one I posted. Both of em are good, and will last you. The AC WiFi I personally have as my own modem instead of getting one thru my company (Which would be free any way since free internets/cable/phone/security). No issues with it at all, easy set up for port forwarding and such.

Only point that scares some people away is the price tag...but was worth it to me in my view.

CS, that one you posted is okay...but we have had problems with that modem at work... Hell, I don't think we even give those out to techs anymore to install

I called my interwebs company to confirm it was compatible with the 300mbps service before ordering it (went with the sb6180) and they said it did.

Just hooked it up and getting 110/10 instead of 300/30

Is there a setting or something you can do? because I'll be legit pissed if this thing can't go 300mbps after I was told by the representative it would

It can get 300Mbps, but two things could be wrong :
1). Your modem has the wrong BIN file attached to it (Dictates what speed you get)
2). Your NIC is not able to go past that 100 Mbps speeds ( shocking, but a lot of customers have this issue ).

If it's the first, then unplug the modem, unscrew coax and leave for about a minute. Put the Coax back on, then plug the power back in. This SHOULD force the modem to download a new BIN
file. If not, Tech Support will have to send an update hit to your modem.

    Boo

The modem I was renting was getting those speeds just fine. They're sending a tech tomorrow. I guess I'll have to wait around all day for him (Was trying to resolve it on my own)

ALready tried the unplugging and unscrewing but didn't have any success

If it was working fine on their modem, but not on yours...chances are the modem isn't changing taking the BIN file or the firmware upgrade. Almost all D3 modems had to get upgraded Firmware when the new speeds got put out for a lot of MSOs. I personally got to test though the 300/30 up as a TWC Employee before even other employees got it. Modem had to do two firmware upgrades in order to
    access said speeds.

Hmmm, at this point it may actually be the BIN file. Tech Support would need to check ( or a service tech ). Cannot be a utilization issue as it was working fine with their modem, but when you swapped yours
it dropped. It's an issue on the modem end honestly. I think that is one of the reasons why we stopped deploying those surfboards out to the field... because even the ones we had wouldn't play nice.

If you had TWC I could help you out a lot easier as I have access to pretty much the entire enterprise footprint... I do Network Analyst work for South Texas...but still do Utilization reports for East Coast since our TOC reps there derp harder than some FFXI players.

So far not looking good. Tech went back to his van but he didn't even check anything yet. Just said if I was getting the speed on the rented modem and not on mine then I should just keep renting...

Sounds like a lazy tech! Seriously though, I do not know much about modems, routers, and what not but after I bought my 6121 Comcast was very difficult to work with. I had an issue where I was getting literally .5mbps down and 13mbps up. Tech comes out and first thing he says is it's my modem.

Yea; that's not shit I like to hear especially when I called them while I was ordering it, gave them the model number and let them know it was on their PDF for approved modems, then asked if it was compatible with the 300mbps service I'm paying for (and was told yes, there would be no issues and it would work w/ my service)

Whenever I have to deal with Comcast for anything anymore I keep calling back until I get someone on the phone that actually wants to help. At my new place the internet randomly went out. It's an apartment building so I'm 95%+ sure it's not my place. Called four times until I had someone tell me to unplug the coax, wait a few minutes, and try again. That solved it.

You'll get it figured out. I'm sure someone else here can chime in too on how to handle this.
