    Buying music isnt that bad!

Well... I signed up for Yahoo music... It's not that bad... $0.79 (Sometimes $0.99) a song and then $0.70- (Depending on what album and what price!) isnt that bad... Now I own an iPod meaning the Yahoo! Music that I buy isn't compatible because it has DRM right? WRONG! If I burn it to a CD then RIP it to my hard drive it frees it of the DRM which isnt that bad because well I have a backup of my music on a CD now incase my hard drive crashes. Now Yahoo! Music doesn't have every album that iTunes has... Some I may want that Yahoo! Doesn't have but iTunes does... Well iTunes isnt a subscription like Yahoo! Is... So I can buy an album for $9.99 without having to subscribe and if I want to put it on any other mp3 player I just burn it and rip it which frees that of its DRM as well so now I have a backup and I can put it on any MP3 player! The nice thing is... When I burn a cd if I have to rerip it... Its not illeagal because I own it and its fair use! So I can do whatever I want with my music... Its actually not that bad if you think about it!

Edit: Some songs on yahoo are $0.79 and some are the normal $0.99 (New albums can be both suprisingly! I have seen some for .79 and some for.99. Albums range from 9.99 to somewhere around $7-$8 including new albums!)

I still prefer to buy CDs of bands I support because I like to flip through the liners and shit.

That is if you don't get caught... I was reading a magazine the other night saying that the worst way to download ANYTHING is thru torrents... This is because IT SHOWS YOUR IP for one and NOTHING is stopping them from sampling the packets your are sending and receiving and finding out what your downloading... Why 2 days ago I got caught when I downloaded a movie... I got an email from comcast telling the EXACT name, time, date, size, IP, and pretty much everything about me and what I was downloading when I was downloading it! So NOTHING is stopping them from catching you and it only takes 1 time then the next morning you get an email from comcast or your ISP telling you about them finding out! I'm not trying to preach anything and I'm not saying "stop downloading" I'm just saying I got caught and I'd rather not pay $1000+ for only $300+ worth of songs and albums if I get caught again!

They also saying if they caught me again they would report me and either suspend or terminate my internet connection.

Edit: Also the magazing said something about not being able to spoof your IP because the tracker or the seeds and leechers don't know where to send the data and where the request is coming from but I'm not really into networking so I really wouldn't know if that is true or not !

Edit2: Plus I don't have to worry about getting caught because the music I buy is totally legal!

Don't act like they will get caught, because they won't. I personally don't pirate unless it's a song from a soundtrack or game that I can't find ANYWHERE for sale. Goes for music, software, etc. Lol, I even bought my copy of Windows. >.>

Heh, you keep saying this as if your posts are some of those "click my referrals link so I can get a free iPod!" thing.

And uh, I've never been caught (knock on wood) in the years I've been using torrents, so I don't plan on stopping unless the FBI shows up at my house with a gun to my face telling me to stop.

    BTW torrents are legal.

Its called peer to peer transfer. Napster was a Server to peer transfer. Let me make an analogy

Torrents are like a friend copying a CD and giving it to you. (legal)

Napster was like a movietheatre copying a movie, showing it to you (for free, but offering snacks (ie advertisments from napster) during the show) (Illegal)

    Wow, that is completely false.

I'm not saying they are going to get caught I'm sharing my opinions on buying music and what I have read and researched so that everyone can read it and voice their own opinion on the matter. As well as correcting people with things I have read and stuff that is kind of common sense in my mind ! I'm really just spreading the knowledge !

I don't really understand what you are saying but yes if I bought the music and burned it to a CD and I still have proof of me buying it and burning it (AKA A credit card charge history and yahoo's records of me buying it. Also yahoo's terms even say I can burn it when I sign up for it [Went and checked]) then I'm in the clear if any investigation people come to my house for no reason and check my computer. (I cleared my hard drive using a program that writes and erases useless data at least 10 times or until all of the signs of old deleted stuff is gone)

    Both Quoted from a magazine:

This covers if you rip a copy protected DVD:
Q: Is it ever legal to DE-DRM my media
A: If you have to bypass any kind of encryption scheme to copy your tracks, you're violating the law as set forth in the DMCA. However, as long as you don't the de-DRM's content and distribute it, it's extremely unlikely you'll actually be caught and prsecuted.

This KIND OF covers ripping music (Remember PERSONAL is the key word here):
    What is "Fair Use"?
Fair use is an aspect of the United States (I live in the US I don't know if you do though and if you don't I don't know if this applys to you but I'm assuming you are [I know I should never assume lol]) copyright law that allows people to copy and reuse copyrighted material for certain protected uses including personal use. The docterine of fair use basically allows you to make backup copies, or even transfer content from one medium to another, as long as its for YOUR OWN PERSONAL USE.
Of course, there's a catch. If you have to bypass a protection scheme in order to excersice your fair-use rights, you'll be in violation of the DMCA. It's quite the gnarly loophole isn't it?

So your saying if your ripping a copy of your FRIENDS cd but see with torrents unless your friend is hosting that torrent you dont know the person now do you?

    Edit:

If your talking about torrents as I stated above there is NOTHING stopping them from tracing and sampling the packets that you are sending and recieving so this is also false... How do you think they found out I was downloading billy madison on June 19th 2006 at 9am to 1pm? Yes they even had the time and dating when it started and ended as well as the file size in bytes and my external IP address LMFAO!

Edit2: They even knew what BT client I was using FFS!

Edit3: Also if its peer to peer transfer and there is no way to prove it... Then how come there was an article about a guy getting caught for downloading music and movies off of limewire? They set traps and trace where the packets are going even on limewire and other p2p networks!

You can 'scrape' torrents to get the list of people on it, how long they've connected, how much they've transferred, etc. and then connect to them to figure out what client they're using. They're just using a slightly modified client, logging onto a suspected torrent, and having it capture all of the normal data, then crossreferencing it with their logs from the system they have in place that assigns network addresses to figure out who you are.

You can get 'caught' on limewire in one of two ways. They could set up their client to share a file with the rest of the world, in effect, becoming illegal content distributors themselves, and logging who tries to get it. Or, they could just search LimeWire to see who has what, download and inspect the content, and then you're caught that way.

Hehe thanks so much for explaining it more... I really didn't know that... I'm not a network tech person so I wouldn't know that ! No sarcsam at all in that actually... Thanks now I know how they do it.

I'll keep pirating music while they keep overpricing it.

While I don't pirate, I would agree with the statement. Infact music should be put on a floating scale, where the price reflects the quality of the music.

Personally, for the next Coheed and Cambria album, I would gladly pay $20/disc for it. But when Hollywood Hogan's daughter comes out with a new (or first) album, I would be happy receiving $20 for walking out of the store with it. So, I guess I see it as a fair trade off. If I walk into Best Buy, grab a copy of Co/Ca and some shitty teenie-bop album, they would not charge me anything.

Is 70 to 99 cents really overpriced?

Edit: In stores yeh it is overpriced thats why I would prefer buying it from a service rather than in the store ! Plus I always end up throwing the case away and keeping the CD so I can put it in my CD case !

For simply receiving digital content you can get for free anywhere else without having to look very hard for it? Yes.

I use a site to pay for music I'm struggling to find or a single I want fast but even then it's only 10 to 15 cents, a somewhat more acceptable fee if I absolutely need to pay. If you're so terrified of getting caught or have morality issues pirating music then all the power to you for taking the legal road, just don't force your opinion down other people's throats (not that I'm necessarily saying you're doing that here).

I still buy music from time-to-time where I feel there is a certain quality to be had - Tool's 10,000 Days is a perfect example - but my main reason for downloading music is to get it early from leaks and advanced copies only certain people have access to. I go and see a lot of bands live and put money in their pockets that way which I feel a whole lot more satisfied with doing. I can't afford to go out and pay $20 for a CD every time someone goes "whoa, check these guys out!" so I download their music then go pay them back by seeing them live if I like them. I know if I was a band I wouldn't give a shit if people were downloading my music if it meant my popularity spread and got more people into my live shows.

i would actually go to the store and get the album unless the artists are already ridiculously rich

basically, one guy said "i wouldnt mind taking a few bucks out of Jay-Z's pocket, but i would support the people under the radar of mainstream"

This is why I like Yahoo!'s Service... If you subscribe you can listen to ANY song (That they have of course) as many times as you want WITHOUT buying it! Instead of iTunes shitty "Listen to the 30 seconds right in the middle of the song" bullshit!
