Jailer of Faith & Earth Resists

This might be n00b forum worthy. If so feel free to abuse me then move the post.

Tried our first JoF last Saturday. Just testing the waters really as we had one person out due to a death in the family and only had one BLM in attendance. Was still fun to see it for the first time. Anyways...

The bastard has quite an annoying range in that little kiting room. Annoying enough that our tanks couldn't reliably stay out of range. So I started thinking about resist setups. Anyone use an Earth resist setup for Faith? I could have swore I saw a post here where someone had SS of stupidly low damage but for the life of me I can't find it. 300+ resists should be doable by our PLD and a couple RDM. I can even get my MNK up around 270 with buffs (with a good 1800+ HP as backup).

Worth bothering? Or does everyone just BLM zerg Faith?

eh, JoFaith seemed pretty eay to me, no point in some whacky strat. Just kite/nuke/ws blabla. It dies. I'm sure you could do something to help with damage but I don't see a point.

There's a very easy strat to use until you get the fight down. You just need 2 tanks trading off hate and kiting him opposite directions (1 CW, 1 CCW). Just wait in the little alcove at the far end as he passes you, and when he's almost out of range, Voke/Flash/whatever. BLMs should try to do this also when they're nuking.

Once you're comfortable with it, you'll just kite/nuke/TP-burn it in a standard fashion and deal with the Breakgas and Stonegas that hit you as they come, but if people can actually follow directions the above strategy lets you pull off a very smooth fight (Even though it takes about half an hour).

Don't use a Paladin to kite Jailer of Faith.

If you want efficiency have a Ninja kite it around the room and keep Gravity on at all times (That way there's no need to have two kiters or elemental buffs).

Keep an eye on hate distribution... WHM stays out of the alliance for Stona... Make sure the Ninja gets Erase... Have someone announce -ga when JoF starts casting (Meaning: get the hell away from the kiter).

Uh, pld is gonna hold hate better on a kited JoFaith. It's not a really difficult mob to kite- distance plugin kthx. Gravity isn't totally needed but it helps. As long as you have Cuisses its pretty easy.

PLD can be main kiter on JoF. W legs is almost a requirement I'd say; but one thing I was able to do was when he started to cast Breakga, IV or -ga just run into the side chambers and more often than not you are able to outrun the cast.

Our first fight was a bit of a tough fight with 12 people, but when we got the strategy down it wasn't an issue.

Just try to keep Gravity on it and have people use care and common sense.

DDs shouldn't be going balls-to-the-wall crazy on him and pulling hate at every chance (and thus MPKing people). DDs should watch their hate, dealing steady damage, and ready to react if they do pull hate. Most of the big damage should also be done while it's casting on someone else, since if you do pull hate he can't instantly stop casting the spell and cast on you.

Tanks should be doing just about the same, where they try to stay far enough to get out of range from his spells at any time. Any tank works really.

Doing the above effectively you can avoid having him land just about all spells minus some Slowgas.

In addition, just a normal set of magic damage defense gear does perfectly fine against him (which most tanks should have anyway). With just Shell it cuts down -gas to around 500-800 damage and even single target Quake/Stones down to a survivable 800-1.3k. I wouldn't really recommend relying on earth resist gear, as it's only a chance to resist, and in a normal elemental resist set and dealing with spells that deal 1-2k+ damage you'll get oneshot if you ever don't resist (which will happen around 10-20% of the time).

    Thanks for the input everyone.

Now that we've seen how it moves we'll be trying to kite more efficiently with our tanks. Bouncing it from one side to the other looked like a winner after the fact. Ducking in the little room is a nice heads up too.

Our PLD does have Crimson and some +MDB gear. If that's a better way to go here than +Resists the no problem. He wasn't getting one shotted; he just got whittled down. After about 20min with other people getting clipped with AOEs we ran out of steam. Our NIN will have to work on +MDB gear though, but it's not terribly pricey.

Shadow Bind to let him cool down a bit when he builds Gravity resist is a good tip too, thanks.

It was our first try and with 12+1 outside WHM..and only one BLM. I'm sure next try will go much better.

I think everyone has a really shitty JoF run at least once, he's a real bitch. Especially on those first few kills... I remember losing like 10k exp or so on our first JoF with around 18, which was also back when there was very little known info about them. But, now we usually kill it with a much smaller amount of people and often without any deaths.

So yeah, it also has a lot to do with just getting experience with him.

If everyone is being a little careful with hate, its quite possible to take him from 100-0% without him getting a singe damaging spell off (I usualy will let him get slowga off if it gives me time to build a little more hate).

I've always kited with wyrmal, but I think if you keep gravity up, and know how he paths it woudn't be much of a problem to kite w/o (I'm usually standing in the corner for 4-5s after getting out of range).

The big key I think is to just take it easy at first, get the the whole process worked out, then push as much damage as you can while allowing your tanks to maintain hate.

I did a quick search on +Earth resist for PLD on Somepage.com, and there really wasn't that much gear that would be feasible to equip in slots not needed for other stats (HP / Enmity +). But if you were serious about getting more + Earth resist, you could check out the following:

    Steamed Catfish
    Clay Amulet
    Auster's Staff
    Gaia Mantle
    Sand Gloves
    All + VIT rings

This could put you upwards of +50 or so resist without any carol or spells on you, but personally I'd suggest going with kiting and enmity gear.

    rangers
in the room you kite them in, a ranger can stay across the way from the kited mobs and still deal damage, circling opposite the path every few turns to stay out of possible ga range. We do this all the time, makes taking them down safe and easy. An emergency shadowbind can save souls as well.

    Everybody forgot the ranger, makes me sad ; ;

we had 1 RNG and a few SAM/RNGs, That seemed to work allright. We got unlucky on him with a few bad breakgas.

I'll make a more detailed post about kiting this thing later, since I've done it 22 times in the last month... but for now I'll just say that this definitely still works, as of two days ago.

From my experience with JoF, it's easiest to tank with a nin/brd in standard emnity and -dmg% gear. If in any way possible, have more than 1 whm. With 2 whm's we place them on opposite sides of the kiting room which ensures both of them don't get hit with breakga at once, allowing a quick stona on the tank so he can continue to run away and avoid lots of aga's getting off on the alliance.

Only other thing to note is that epeen melee make this fight a lot harder, trying to post huge numbers with ws is a big mistake and usually results in aga's and breakgas getting off when they pull hate. I also wouldn't bother with any resist setups, just blink tank it and stoneIV isnt a problem.
