USB Problem

Ok so I need to throw some riddils on some shit...

I recently upgraded a couple PC parts (mainly processor motherboard ram video card anda new HDD), and something is seriously wrong with the USB. I installed windows, and certain USB periphals arent working, namely my printer and PS2 adapter. I've reinstalled windowsxp countless times, thinking it was corrupt installs, bare XP, XP w/ SP1, then upgraded to SP2, installed XP with SP2 integrated, XP media center edition...all fail. Whenever I try to insert the printer/adapter, I get an error about "USB Device not recognized", 'please reinsert the device or replace it'. The printer drivers at the time were instaled, and my PS2 adapter doesnt even have drivers, straight up plug and play. I've plugged these into both the USB ports on the motherboard, as well as in my old USB card that I used for my previous PC. If its a matter of USB drivers, they've all been updated every install.

At this time, I've run out of viable solutions, I've spent pretty much all day sautrday on this, and a couple hours friday night.

My last two options that I can try is install Vista on my PC (something I'm completely against, I dont like to use OS's when they're still new), or return my mobo and get a new one.


Anyone ever heard of that malfunction ?

to me just sounds like the ports are dead i mean shit happens some times ports die for one reason on another.

check to see if its an irq conflict, then check to see if plug and play is enabled on your bios.

better yet, have you installed the chipset drivers for the motherboard?

Some chipsets act funky if you do not install their drivers... Dell Mobos being VERY notorious for this.

I'm reinstalling XP w/ SP2right now...

but where do I check for IRQ conflicts exactly ? Cause its not like I have anything thats not on-board installed

well I'm on vista atm, using drivers that I just downloaded off intel.com, and its still not working

If you've upgraded your Motherboard and just slapped in a HardDrive with a previous install of XP, you need to remove all of the chipset specific drivers under Device Manager. Your new Motherboard should have a drivers disk that you can reload after rebooting.

Stuff to remove would be listed under System Devices in Device Manager, and under Universal Serial Bus Controllers. This can BSOD your system if the removal of the devices does not go cleanly. Typically a re-insall is safer.

Also, Are the usb devices that are having problems attached to the Onboard USB connector that are at the back of the PC or did you need to run a Cable onboard to the face of your case? If it's attached to the Cable one you might have the cable upside down. (Yes I know most onboard cable should have a solid block to avoid this, but not all do.)

Anyways, I got it working, kinda.
It finally recognized my printer when I powered it down then powered it back on. PS2 adapter still isnt working, though it may be a technical issue in the adapter cause it didnt register in my laptop either. Maybe I set it down near a magnet or something similar. Picked up a new gamepad for 30$, better than the hassle of sending shit back for a relacement.


For all extensive purposes, Vista was actually pretty cool, has a nice look to it imo. Only reason I went back to XP is cause the video card drivers for it fucking cockblock me at 1024x768 resolution for some reason. LAAAAAAME

that is mainly a whole computer , But yeah you should:

1) Do a clean install of WinXP SP2 (Or Vista).

2) Before plugin the peripherials, update the mobo drivers and vcard drivers.

3) Test each USB device on its own.


P.S. Have you tried any other USB devices, like an USB flash driver ? id check with other devices before even doing a clean install.
