Lately there have been alot of abstinance commercials on tv here in PR. Now my first reaction is: "Hey, it must be some religious group, no harm done". But to my amazement it's a campaign started by the government here.

Now, i'm not an overtly sexual person, but there is no denying the positive effects of sex. I don't quite understand the logic behind an abstinance campaign, instead of a safe sex one, as many other countries do, and have shown results. I don't see the need to use such an archaic form of control, when in fact abstinance isn't exactly something easy to follow. It wasn't that much of a problem to me until i saw this:

Aumento de inseguridad social
Depresión y tendencia suicidas

Some of the things they are saying are absolutly wrong, claiming that sex before marriage makes you loose self esteem, increases your insecurity, causes depression and a tendency for suicide, interrupts personal development, and gives a feeling of guilt. Now, BG you tell me, are these really side effects of sex before marriage? Or am i just ignorant?

Well okay, explain to me how sex leads to depression and thoughts of suicide? I would think NOT having sex for long periods of time would cause that.

In the long run, if they inforce this in any way shape or form, it will just cause people to get married sooner... which would lead to what might be the highest Divorce rate in the world.

Stupidest thing I have ever heard. People are going to have sex, there is no stopping it. Make birth control available to everyone at a low cost and start education early on.

A 21 year old couple procreating out of wedlock is no different than their doing so in wedlock. Its not like getting married equals a sudden ability to make enough money to support a family.

No matter what you say will stop people from having sex.
Telling them they will be depressed and have thoughts of suicide if they have sex before marriage is just plain stupid.

Teaching people early about it and making sure safe measures are taken everywhere would be a much better idea than scaring people away from it.

There's really no argument that abstinence is the safest choice in regards to sexual activity. Many people want their children to be safe. So is it really that shocking there's a group promoting this? You don't have to be religious to be against taking unneeded risks, which is sex before marriage.

You are in fact ignorant. The campaign is aimed at adolescents, not the general grown up population. Indeed, having sex during the adolescent years does cause major psychological effects to some teens.

I know for whom the campaign is aimed at. That doesn't change the fact that abstinance campaigns don't work. And these teens that obtained psychological problems from sex are in fact a minority.

Also interesting to note that one of the reasons that some teens have negative effects from sex is due to the negative image that sex itself may have for them.
