    New RAM, but problems

Ok so i've been using the stock RAM with my computer for a long time, and i decided to upgrade. Got the new RAM today, went from 512MB to 2gigs, but my problem is when I turned on the computer with both sticks of 1gig in, it wouldnt do anything. The monitor wouldnt come or on anything. I thought the RAM might be bad or something so I paired each stick up with one of the old sticks, and it works fine with 1 gig/256MB in it. Tried that with both sticks and they both worked so i dont think that's it. So i come here to seek help.

I called the company i got my pc from and they said it maxes out at 2 gig.

    Here's the new stuff I got: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820211066

Here's the old stuff: Hynix 25MB 1Rx16 PC2-4200U-444-12(<- read this off the stick) 256 MB PC4200 533 MHz DDR2 Dual-Channel Memory Module (<- this from the website)

My computer is a Gateway DX210S.

If anymore info is needed i'll gladly post it. Thanks for any help.

Make sure they're both seated all the way. Try putting one stick in at a time and see if you can get it to work with just 1 1GB stick. You might have 1 or 2 DOA sticks of RAM.

But I would unseat them, then reseat them one at a time first.

Do you get your Motherboard post screen? It just beeps and that's it?

Did you try both sticks just by themselves and you're sure they're seated all the way?(Clicked in)

The monitor doesnt even turn on. Both sticks were seated completely. The computer beeps and no screen comes up when i have just one in.

    Re: New RAM, but problems

    Your motherboard might not handle that RAM too well;

    http://support.gateway.com/s/MOTHERBD/M ... 8sp2.shtml

    # Memory Support Two DDR2 DIMM slots
    # Accept DDR2 533/667 MHz single channel modules
    # Expandable up to 2 GB

Some boards are fussy about supporting RAM faster than they can cope with.

Have you tried booting with a single gig stick in for each of them?

    Re: New RAM, but problems

I did for one, all the computer did was beep at me so i figured it couldnt run with an empty slot (only have 2 slots) and i didnt try the other.

Try the other, that first stick might be toast.

I put in both sticks paired with my old 256 stick (1gig|256mb) and it turned on and everything and with each stick in, I checked the properties on my computer and it was saying i had 1.2gig in my pc.

You could try a BIOS update, check you have the latest version.

    W7248AG2.10L

That's the latest, released October '06.

Burn to CD, floppy disk or USB flash drive, yep.

There's a link for download instructions and one for install instructions on that url I posted.

Ok i tried to do the BIOS thing and when i set it to run at optimized settings, it made my rear fan stop blowing as fast as it was and now my pc is getting really hot. Is there anyway to make the fan pick back up?

    Re: New RAM, but problems

Not sure if you're still having the issue with your RAM but it looks like your motherboard doesn't support the RAM you bought.

    You got the PC2 - 6400 when your PC only supports PC2 - 5300 or PC2 - 4200.

I would return them and get these :

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820211061

It's the same brand and everything of the ones you got but these are the PC2 - 5300 sticks.

Google Speedfan or use the utilities Gateway should have provided.
