Scholar in FFIII was essentially the Chemist class but without mixing properties and could see the hp of an enemy and the weakness/elemental affiliation of an enemy. It had lvl 1-3 White and Black magic and used books as its weapons. The reason it was the precurser to Chemist was cause it had trait "double the potency of an item" which was a common trait for Chemist along with the ability to mix.

My guess is that it IS Chemist but as a job that sounds more like... a job, rather than a crafting skill. (my hypothesis only)
