PS2 Imported Game?

Ok so I've stumbled across this kickass looking game:

and I want to buy it straight up. Will this work on my roommates PS3 which was purchased in America? Do I need to mod it somehow to be able to play japanese games or should it run fine? I know he downloads japanese demos from the JP marketplace all the time because they get them a few days earlier sometimes or something like that but I'm not sure about japanese games.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, maybe I can inpsire other people who may like naruto to enjoy this game too so here are a few links to some youtube videos:

Really effing cool because the 4th is obviously alot faster than Itachi, freakin teleporting around with that jutsu he uses. The reason he had the nickname "white lightning" or whatever.

Gaara actually uses his sand the entire match as his main form of combat and even rides on the cloud of sand like he does in the manga lol.

PS3 games on PS3 are not region locked.
PS2/1 games on PS3 ARE region locked.
So no, it will not work without a chip (if the PS3 even has one yet?)

Long answer: Get a used PS2 (now days are dirt cheap), also buy a "flip top" for your PS2 to play most imports and cd-rs w/o the chip's hassle.
