RDM Tanking and How To Go About It?

Hi I was just wondering about how to tank as RDM? What You can Tank as RDM? What is CE and VE and how they affect and help you as a tank? And what gear you should be using and what subs work the best on which mobs?

I'm a noob at this wanted to get some insight because it seems like fun to be able to be a new generation tank!

Thanks In Advanced for the Info :D

All the LS RDM that I see tanking, sub /nin and stack enmity gear in every slot possible. They wear two of the chainsaw swords...machulitl (msp), high breath mantle and most have af2 pieces elsewhere. I'm sure they have a macro pallete of spells they spam to stack hate...I'm certain they have a sleep macro...or two.

Re: RDM Tanking and How To Go About It?

From what I have seen RDM tanking is much more situational than other jobs. For example, many like /WAR for JoL because this no physical damage if positioned correctly. Anyway, spells that are used for hate should be like a combination of NIN/DRK and PLD, with a few RDM specific spells tossed in.

Blind and Sleep are your standard spells, with Dispel replacing Stun in the comparison to NIN/DRK. Cure IV is also excellent for hate, and you might want to consider using the Cure III trick that PLD use.

Gear is dependent on the fight, with enmity being your standard goal, then either haste or magic defense depending on the fight.

Re: RDM Tanking and How To Go About It?

I would say, stack up enm/fast cast gear and while you're building up hate at the beginning of a fight, spam spells like Sleep(I & II), Bind, Dispel and Blind. After you've capped out hate (which takes a minute or two), you can stick to the lower MP spells like Sleep, Dispel, Blind, and toss out cures to whoever. From what I read in Ashira's and (I forget his name) enm study a while back, Dispel, Sleeps and Blind are probably your best spells. Keep stoneskin, refresh, haste, phalanx and if you can, but not a necessity, Aquaveil up. If you get hit pretty hard, you'll probably want to toss out the more hate grabbing spells like Bind and Sleep II again. Convert is pretty sick because you can toss yourself a couple Cure IV's for some massive hate. If you're lucky enough to have a relic horn you can pretty much just spam whatever the hell you want, because you most likely won't run out of mp.

One of our RDM tanks used rdm/pld for tanking JoL, which worked out pretty well since you don't have to worry about physical attacks and you get Flash/auto refresh/and more job abilities that can grab hate. It was a pretty good idea. Stack up plenty MDB on JoL and you're set.

But, yeah rdm tanking is situational. It's good for like Wyrms, TaU hnm, or Fafhogg. Things you kite or things that easily die, PLD is better.

Re: RDM Tanking and How To Go About It?

Thanks for all the advice still a few more questions though
Would this be an ideal set up for Tanking with a few adjusments here and there?

    Weapons: 2x Machuhalialairl+1 (Enmity +4 sword)
    Ranged: Lamia Bow+1
    Head: Warlocks Chapeau +1/Duelist Chapeau
    Neck: Harmonia's Torque
    Earrings: Loq + Ethereal/Hades+1/Eris+1
Rings: Shadow Ring + Bomb Queen/Mermaid/Bloodbead
Back: Shadow Mantle or High Breath Mantle or Cerberus Mantle
    Waist: Swift Belt or Warwolf
Legs: Crimson Legs or Nashira Serawheels
Feet/Hands: Dusk or Crimson/Blood or AFv2 or those lvl 68 Feet from Assault with Mdb +4
Body: Crimson Scale Mail + Dalmatica or AFv2

    and another question:
What are CE and VE? How do they affect your tanking? :O

We usually bring just enough to skillchain? If we're zerging something there's no need for a 'tank' anyway. Otherwise DDing is just adding unneeded TP to the mob.

If it's one of those rare mobs that we actually throw a lot of DD at (JoJ, etc.) then we use PLD anyway because the fight doesn't last very long.

    lol ok

There are times for melee burn, there are times for SC + MB. Sorry to say if you do everything melee style, you're dumb.

to re rail this post..from what i've seen in my ls.
you don't need macuachuitl+1's just use earth staff and stack emnity in other slots, spam sleep, sleepII, blind, bind, and dispel and repeat till you get hate and when you get stop spamming spells, pretty basic.

Honestly, i've tanked Tiamat on RDM/NIN without any of that stuff (and even accidentally kept on Tamas Ring even) without losing hate. The job really is fundamentally broken as a tank if you know how to play it right :3

Re: RDM Tanking and How To Go About It?

CE, Cumulative Enmity, you get this with Blind, Sleep, Dispel, etc.

It has a Cap, taking damage lowers your total CE (I believe), doing damage, and healing damage increase your total CE, apparently based on the percentage taken/dealt/cured.

VE is "spike" hate, voke, many job abilities, and I think some spells have VE components, what it looks like to me is that doing damage/curing damage may have a VE component based on the percent dealt/cured as well, but hate of this type will decay back to zero fairly rapidly.

Easy test taken from Kaeko and Ashiras testing.

Find a mob, have someone Flash it, then Voke it.

The mob will turn to whoever voked it for 20-30 seconds, then turn back to whoever Flashed it.

    CE and VE in action.

Rdm has almost no access to real VE generators, but you can very rapidly hit the CE cap (tip: barspells give a lot of hate/mp) and stay there.

VE spikes will turn the mob if large enough, but generally once you get your CE built up you'll have hate.

Re: RDM Tanking and How To Go About It?

RDM actually gets one of the strongest and most spammable VE generators in Blind; 640 VE, 10 second recast, 2 second base casting time, 5 MP. It's just that current RDM tanking schemes generally choose not to use it. It should be extremely easy to remain capped on VE as a RDM tank with 2-3 blinds thrown in the spell order. I don't know if this works in practice though as I've never seen it.

... you don't want to wait like one minute for some of the strongest hate in the game? I'm not hating on plds though. I like pld tanks, but rdm is just as good, if not better in some situations.

I don't see TP burn Fafhogg being too fun either... Sure they could be done, but jesus that would be a pain in the ass.

Yeah he has a nice little explanation of rdm/nin tanking down near the bottom in the "RDM/NIN What it do, mang" section.
