    Codec Pack

Just got a new PC, has Vista, and I don't know much technically with computers, my old PC has like every codec for movies I could ever want, and pretty much plays anything without a problem.

Problem is I can't remember for the life of me how I got them, is there a good comprehensive codec pack or anything that will work with Vista that will give me all access to .mkv and all forms of video crap that the random shit I'm torrenting might come in?

Also should go without saying, but as this is a brand new computer, I'd really like to not fuck it up on the 2nd day, so reliable codec pack I guess, lol.

Was just about to type that Codec Pack. I just use WMP but that player works nicely as well.

    Re: Codec Pack

I use Windows Media Classic for almost all my movies. Other than that it's always VLC Media Player for the HD movies and DVD movies I pop in the computer. Winamp for music onry.

Is there a difference in resolution between players? Have this new widescreen LCD screen, I'd like to put it to use lol

    Re: Codec Pack

K-Lite is trash, use CCCP. K-Lite is just a huge collection of codecs, 90% of which are completely useless or redundant, and it makes a mess out of your system with tons of unnecessary shit. CCCP covers all the same useful stuff, without all the crud.

Edit: K-Lite Basic/Standard aren't as bad, but they're still not as good as CCCP. They undershoot, Mega overshoots, CCCP is right in the middle.

Damn just installed K-lite lol, should I uninstall or it? Or just live with it?

It worked for what I was trying to watch that wasn't playing before, so I'm happy atm lol.

CCCP is awesome. I like VLC player for listening to streaming media, and I haven't noticed any kind of picture quality difference between VLC and WMPLite

get rid of k-lite (if you can) i swear it caused me troubles

besides cccp comes with media player classic, but download vlc while ur at it, the two of them combined will play anything (although my computer still hates quicktime...)

There's no hope for QuickTime; it's even broken on Macs.

    Not this.

Personally, I've found HD movies (both 720p/1080p) best play back using Media Player Classic with CoreAVC (for ffdshow if your computer is a bit better) and Haali Media Splitter. For .avi and .wmv I just use VLC... but for all the good stuff MPC does the best.

Lol at the K-Lite bashing because it did "naughty things" to peoples' computers. Roofles says I, roofles.

I just use ffdshow, mkv splitter and directvobsub. I don't need to worry about some of those obscure formats.

    Re: Codec Pack

cccp is basically media player classic or zoomplayer packaged with ffdshow, haali's splitter, and vsfilter. if you can't play something with it you're trying to play real media and fail.

VLC uses internal filters for everything, its subtitle filter is utter shit and h264 playback tends to be slower then using coreavc(fuck yeah pirating)/ffdshow, but it will still manage to play everything. generally I only use it for streaming video and playing partial files.

    Re: Codec Pack

VLC uses all it's own internal codecs.
K-Lite blows, I used it before and it was making videos play upside down and whatnot.
Took it off my machine and installed CCCP and had no problems since.
