    Upgrading CPUs

I am looking to upgrade my old Core 2 CPU to something faster. I am pretty new to upgrading PC stuff myself, but I have been reading up about motherboard and CPU compatibility requirements.

My current mobo: NVIDIA nForce 570-SLI Chipset, Socket AM2 (940) (Acccording to MOBOT: Chipset Spec Sheet: Abit nForce 570 SLI Motherboards.org)

    My current CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E6300 (2x 1.86GHz/2MB L2 Cache/1066FSB)

Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent CPU that I can upgrade to without having to change out my motherboard?

Since I am at work right now, I grabbed that info off the order sheet I had saved in my email when I ordered my PC a few years ago. I will have to check the specs when I get home.

Edit: This is the motherboard, I am positive: http://www.xpcgear.com/msik9sliv2.html

As for the processor, IIRC when I check my system properties it does say I have a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor.

If that's what Windows says you have for a processor then that's positively not your motherboard

Ok, I just got home and ran a dxdiag and the intel cpu is correct, but my mobo is this: MSI Global – Computer, Laptop, Notebook, Desktop, Mainboard, Graphics and more. In the email I got from IBuyPower, the mobo was listed wrong.

What the heck is it with people using IBuyPower so much? That board supports a quad-core. Go out and get yourself one of these:

edit: actually I take that back, your board can't handle a yorkfield. this instead:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819117127

That's the best you're going to do with that motherboard.

Laziness. That's the only reason to use IBuyPower.

Ah ok.. well first things first, you'll probably have to flash the BIOS before you upgrade. Not a big deal, and it doesn't cost anything. Here's the link for the most recent file.

    Then I'd go with this CPU : Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 Wolfdale 3.16GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775

Why a dual over a quad? At the moment you really don't need more than a dual core for gaming, and it should be that way for a little while. And your board, while a bit aged, is still plenty good for what you plan to do with it.
