The White Engine is the name for Square Enix's new generation middleware game development tool, and it's being used to create Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and an unnamed MMORPG that hasn't really been discussed by the company. Now as part of the Game Developers Conference, head of R&D at Square Enix Taku Murata is presenting the whats, whys, and hows of the White Engine, presumably including demonstrations. Could this lead to an unveiling of media from the new MMO? Anything's possible. Square usually like to keep information close to their vest, but if one views this as a coming out party for a new development tool they hope to sell to other game companies, it would probably work in their advantage to show what the engine can really do. Additionally, despite releasing an expansion for the game this November, Final Fantasy XI, their current MMORPG for the PS2, Xbox 360, and PC, is showing it's age and if they want to keep players from defecting to newer MMOs (as well as win over new customers), it's likely they'll show something soon.

Of course, this is working under the assumption that the new MMORPG is going to be part of the Final Fantasy series. While that's a good bet, due to the name recognition and worldwide popularity of the games, it's also possible that the company could mine another one of it's franchises for the game, such as Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, or perhaps a glorious rebirth for Rad Racer. It's possible nothing will come of it, but those who just can't wait should make sure to pay attention in a few weeks to the flood of information coming out of GDC.

Anyways, FFXI-2 (for lack of a better nickname for it) would have to be pretty fucking special for it to make me want to play it and quit FFXI.
(otherwise if I ever did quit FFXI, it'd be to leave for WoW, or get back to RL)

Some of the regular contributors to kotaku are openly gay. It's not that rare. What does being gay have to do with your gaming preference? Got me there...maybe they just want representation wherever they can get it. Can't hate on that.

SE's new MMO has a minefield of mistakes they should have learned from with FFXI it has to clear before I can dare consider it. It's not looking likely that I'll play it because of that.

Alot of the problems associated with FFXI would be nonexistent in the next MMO. SE is a successful game company, they aren't half retarded children who don't learn from mistakes. Also, FFXI is old, they can't just fix everything without spending too much money to make a profit from. The next game should be much more promising since FFXI was their first venture into the genre and now they have a bit more experience and other MMOs to base their concepts from and perfect.

I'm a WoW fan and all but really all it is is that WoW has a secret question. They are a little better about item restoration and in game scams and stuff but I mean come on.

If they haven't figured out to put a secret question in yet, gg, I would return it before I finished signing up as soon as I realized it.

If they are to continue being a successful company it would be in their best interest to learn from their mistakes. While FFXI is far from perfect, it has seen many improvements since it first began. As previously mentioned, it's an older game, and some things they just can't change without a lot of trouble.
