Actually, our economy is probably going to be in serious shit when it reaches European prices. The American economy is based off of cheap fuel prices allowing people to to live in their lovely little suburban cul-de-sac and companies to cheaply ship their tacky cheap baubles to big box stores. What happens to a consumer-based economy when it can no longer consume?

Why would anyone put anything besides 85 octane in their car anyway? It's just a waste of money.

Before anyone says "but my car runs so much better on premium gas!" you should probably know that unless you are running 12:1 compression or higher pistons and cylinder heads, it doesn't make any difference at all, not to mention the 5 points of difference between regular and premium gasoline is pretty insignificant anyway. Also, since most "fast" cars nowadays have a supercharger on them, they are only capable of running 8 or 9:1 compression. Any higher than that on a supercharged/turbocharged engine and you are just asking for a piston meltdown.

The ONLY benefit of running a high-octane fuel in a normal, non-racing engine would be to eliminate precombustion/detonation, or ping as it's more commonly known. That's pretty much all octane is anyway; the rating of a fuel's tendency to ignite without a spark.

Something to consider for all the people in their little JP cars that demand nothing but high octane fuel. If you really want a to benefit from a high octane fuel, run ethanol or nitro methane, those will make a difference (and likely destroy your engine in the process).

octane is a chemical compound, i'd invite an above poster to read about oil cracking (refining) and discover the difference between ethane, methane, hexane...
my memory suggests octane is the hydrocarbon with eight carbon atoms and no double bond?
the rating of a fuel as 85/90/97/etc. is an indicator of the % octane it should contain.
what you get out of using a 'premium' fuel does indeed partly depend on the complexity of your engine management and the manner in which you use the vehicle.

Your's are about half our price's atm and our's are rising everyweek we have seen a 20% cost of food in the last couple months it's really hard work to keep everything going and stay out of debt, prey your's don't turn out like ours is atm cause it's a real struggle to make ends meet.
