Vista all of a sudden not able to recognize a disc drive?

    Hey,

Rockin a new laptop that for all intents and purposes has kicked some major ass, until earlier today when it seems apparently unable to recognize anything I toss into the built in DVD drive. I removed some of the bullshit apps Best Buy tosses on each laptop they sell with a vengeance, and may have accidentally removed something pertaining to the drive, but this was a while ago so I doubt it.

I'd love to hear any quick fixes, and would be happy to provide any more information to diagnose this headache of a problem.

    Thanks, and of course, .

Reinstall DVD drivers from their little recovery or utilites/drivers disk.

I hear the first step is admitting you don't know what someone means.

To be completely honest, I'm blind as a bat when it comes to shit behind the scenes tech-wise. Where would I go about finding these drivers in my system/google and how would I determine which drivers I'll need?

If its a vista based laptop, pretty sure best buy doesn't even have laptops that come with recovery discs anymore. Since in vista, you can create your own (depending on manufacturer)

Ok first of all Right Click on "My computer" or "Computer" and click manage. Once there you'll want to click on Device Manager:
    http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3.../DVDrivers.jpg

Then you want to select the DVD drives to get your make/model stuff... then you should be able to google for the drivers, you can download them, then use that option "Update Drivers" that you see in my Screenshot to update to the ones you downloaded.

Now, if you don't see your DVD in device manager then we have a different problem all together. Let me know if you have questions.

(My screenshot is XP but it's the same in Vista iirc)

I just realized your DVD drive isnt working and I told you to use it for the driver CD..

Ummmmm.. right click Computer, go to Manage, expand the DVD part, right click the expanded part, click update driver, and select the option to check online for updates? Havent delt with Vista drivers in a long while..

Err yeah, see the pic above, just click the update driver selection, and see if there is an update from online option.

Yeah actually you can try to have Vista find the drivers for you, in XP that shit never worked but Vista found a wireless card driver for my USB card the other day, I was surprised.

Really? wow, I have never, ever once seen it work in XP (if it wasn't a plug and play device). If I ever get my XP machine running again, (on work laptop atm), I'll have to upgrade to SP3 just for that.

Re: Vista all of a sudden not able to recognize a disc drive?

It seems the problem is the "HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T40F ATA Device"

I've tried finding the drivers for this online with no luck, and the auto-update feature of vista hasn't had any luck finding and installing the drivers. The exact error states:

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

Check for solutions takes a gander, then stops working immediately and nothing else seems to be working. Any ideas?

EDIT: Did some more poking around and seem to have fixed the problem. For future reference for anyone else working through this, check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060. This is all new to me, but it seems deleting the upper and lower somethings in the registry solved the problem that was likely caused by installing dvd burning software. Thanks for the help guys, couldn't have done it without ya
