IL Governor Blagojevich arrested Tuesday morning

Somewhat surprised this hasn't been posted yet.

Democratic Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich was arrested today on federal corruption charges related to the selection of President-elect Barack Obama's Senate successor. U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald said Blagojevich tried to sell the Senate seat in exchange for favors. Blagojevich also is accused of trying to get members of the Chicago Tribune's editorial board fired for criticizing him.

So we get rid of a corrupt governor (Ryan) only to appoint another corrupt (if not, more) governor.

• Selling senate seat
• Fire Tribune editors who had negative views toward the governor
• Refused to assist the Tribune Co. with the sale of Wrigley Field

(Just to name a few)

I don't think "sad day" can quite sum up how I feel about my state government.

At least the Lt. Gov (Patrick Quinn) looks like he's a really good dude. There's some buzz over in the Dem blogs (and also apparently from Quinn himself) about having a special election instead of filling Obama's seat in the Senate by appointment.. because of the stigma of Blago's corruption on the whole thing now because of this thing.

It seemed like serious news since some people (mostly news reporters I found) weren't sure if Obama had any idea of what was going on and if he was going to take any action about it.

There's some buzz over in the Dem blogs (and also apparently from Quinn himself) about having a special election instead of filling Obama's seat in the Senate by appointment.. because of the stigma of Blago's corruption on the whole thing now because of this thing.

If I were him, I would say that this sounds like a great idea, but it would be entirely irresponsible to spend millions of dollars to hold a special election with the state the economy is in right now. I would say that I'm going to appoint the person who I think is best qualified for the job, then hold a special session of the state senate and have them confirm the pick. If the public still doesn't like the pick then they can vote him out of office when the seat comes up for reelection in 2 years.

I hate Blago and it's about fucking time. Now maybe next time we can pick a governor who isn't a crook. Anyone else think that maybe $4,500 was a little lenient for bail?

Wonkette presents the best argument against having a special election: Obviously the voters of Illinois deserve nothing, anyway, since their recent electoral judgment has produced two (2) consecutive criminal governors and one douchebag Senator who started running for president after four minutes on the job.

What makes this story even crazier is apparently Rahm Emanuel was the one who pulled the trigger on Blagojevich for this and that this guy was already under investigation for other instances of corruption.
