    Wireless network for Xbox360

I have a question for everyone. I have an xbox360 and I want to connect it to my network but it is too far away to run the cable so I wanted to use my wireless network. The problem is that the wireless adapter for the xbox360 is way to expensive. Not only that but my house is solid brick with metal doors which makes for relatively weak signal from my network base.

Is there a way to set up a wireless access point in my living room that can boost the signal from the base router and then connect my xbox360 to it and be able to connect to xbox live that way?

Anyone have any recommendations for a brand or type of wireless access point that would work for this purpose?

When i got -desperate- what I did was used my laptop as a bridge. Xbox360 wired to the laptop, then bridged to the wireless connection which hooked up to the router.

If you're desperate. Really desperate. And a cheapskate :D

Buy a WRT54G (try to find an older version). Throw DD-WRT on it. Set it to act as a bridge. Connect to Xbox 360. Done.

Thanks for the replies. So any wireless router should have a "bridge" setting? I will try it out.

I am being cheap right now and the thick walls of my house are not wireless network friendly.

This is what I did when i was shacked up in a hotel for a couple weeks to save buying the adapter. the connection was complete shit, but it still ran FFXI (on lappy) and CoD at the same time at....manageable speeds

The problem here is that the wireless adaptor won't be a whole lot more than the router in subject here..

With network cables any runs over 15 to 20 feet and you start to lose signal strength. Since my house is brick including the ceiling and floor there isn't any easy way to run network cable from the office to the living room where my xbox is.

I think I have a couple ideas. Eventually I will probably break down and get the wireless adapter for the xbox but I might still need to set up a bridge in the living room to boost the wireless signal anyway.

One more question. If my main wireless router is a dlink but I have a spare linksys and a spare netgear will they connect to eachother? Or do they have to be the same brand to bridge together.

Should not have to be the same brand. Networking is networking either way. I have an apple wireless router and a linksys 4-port switch and they cooperate just fine.

If you end up buying a 360 wireless adapter, buy a brand new one. Some of the used ones just flat out don't work. We got a used one on amazon and when you plug it in to the console, the light turns on, but the 360 never recognizes the device at all.

Setting up bridges (WDS connections) sucks. That's the simplest explanation I can give. Even with the same peices of equipment with different firmware versions, I've had issues with it fully functioning.

WDS is a hit-or-miss kind of deal. I haven't ever actually done a simple bridge, that -might- work a lot simpler than WDS. But... I dunno. I just dislike -yet another- plugged in device around your system setup. If you're anything like me, you've already got a good 6 or 7 things plugged into the surge protector.

I agree though, 360's wireless adapter is pretty darn rediculous. From what i hear, -some- USB based one's work with it. Might want to give a quick look into that if you're interested.

The WGA54G is a wireless bridge that is certified to work with the Xbox 360. It's easy to set up, I used it for awhile and had no problems. It's a bit cheaper than the Microsoft gaming adapter, which is why I'd recommend it.

Thanks everyone Many solutions that will work and are less expensive than the Microsoft adapter.
