Ok, seriously BG. This is the second fucking year I've dealt with Carpenter/Black ants and I can't take this shit anymore. Last year I spent over $40.00 dollars in an assortment of Raidmax housing baits, pastes, gels, Terro Borax Paste baits, outdoor ground baits, the whole nine yards.

Anyone else have tips? We seriously keep our apartment at its cleanest, no food left behind, no soft drinks left on desk for more than a minute, etc.

I'm seriously about to fucking scream at our landlord since the douche bag won't reply my calls on sending some professional out here to do something.

mix mashed potatoes with boric acid, rolling the mix into little balls, place strategically around house. Make sure you don't have pets that could eat that.

last year I used a RAID spray around the outside of my house, including area the bastards can climb. Inside we had a neat little contraption that sends off sound waves too low for human ears to pick up (Other pets can, however) that basically disrupts Ants.

Your problem was solved once you said "apartment". You have to control the problem at the source, and you aren't going to find a source by decontaminating your unit.

I suggest finding points of entrance (baseboards, basement foundation walls if you live in duplex apartment, etc) and making sure everything is sealed properly. There are barrier materials you can use around minimal traffic areas (make sure it's safe for indoor use, because there are a lot of outdoor barrier chemicals for around houses that work well if ants don't have a colony underneath your home). Otherwise, get your trigger finger ready.

I would love to do this method to try it out. But the best I can do that is *safe* around animals would have to be the liquid sugar/borax mixture from Terro on the floors of our apartment.

Since we have a dog and three mischievous cats. I guess we could attempt this on the bathroom floor since the doors are locked/closed. I've seen a few in there (I can't find the exit/entry point in there). We mainly have a problem in our bedroom.

The raidmax paste I mentioned earlier attracts the colony like crazy to it. And they eat it up fast compared to the Terro. But it also seems very ineffective over a 10 day span that I've used it. (I put fresh bait every morning in the areas they move).

Also I've heard those low freq anti-insect tools work at first, but over time the ants and insects become immune to the noise and ignore it. Also I hear its bad to use around pets =/

Ants are funny about lines of powder. If you put down some strong pepper or talcum powder where they're getting it they won't cross the powder, the strong smell cocks up the chemical trail they leave to navigate around.
Apparently dried bay-leaves work too, and I know strong vinegar will do the job if you can put up with the smell.

Though having pets that like to lick anything on the floor around can mess things up.

There's also the far more arduous task of finding every tiny hole they're coming through and blocking them up with silicone gel or some such.

Seriously, to my friends I'm called a clean freak. So I'm guessing my neighbors are fucking pigs because there is no way it can be our unit.

But yeah, If shit comes to worse, is there anyways I can report my landlord to like the Health Dept. or something for ignoring my calls about getting the proper treatment done to this area? Or am I just fucked and should move?

I mix sugar, boric acid, and water and place around the house. I have small dogs so I'll usually put the mixture on small plate saucers and put tin foil over the place and cut a little hole for the ants to get through. It's always taken care of the problem.

My brother had a similar issue when he lived in Northern California, but the ants were coming through a light socket so he couldn't spray anything. He told his landlord about it, 'cause the landlord lived in the next apartment over, and he just said meh, deal with it.

Thankfully the last apartment I lived at didn't have ants, but this time of year was always murder. Those goddamn japanese beetles or whatever that look like ladybugs were everywhere, flying around annoying the shit out of everybody. Couldn't ever find out how they were getting in, though one day I did see one crawling out of a wall socket (figure that the fuck out).

I have never had to do it, but I seem to remember something like a 'Tenant's Bill of Rights'? Or something? You may be able to have something done, but I do not know who you would call. If you plan on staying where you are for a while, and do in fact contact somebody, you may have to put up with shit in the future.

Windex sprayed on an outdoors area will end up killing all the ants that move through it. That's always cleared up the problem for me. Had a colony underneath some concrete steps a few years back, just poured Windex down through the cracks, no more ants.

(If you combine this with Tricen's idea you may have to find a new building to live in.)

I had a big problem with sugar ants until I stumbled upon Terro traps. I put them near water pipes or other points of entry from the outside, as well as in the closets and places I know my cat can't get to, and I haven't had a problem since. Borax works wonders, at least for little ants.
