    Lego you grew up with

grew up with Blacktron being my favorite, or one particular castle set I loved, the WTB lego thread reminded me of it

I had one of these, forget which offhand, but I do recall a car rolled out the back cargo bay:

    http://media.peeron.com/pics/inv/set...756.thumb2.jpg
I think the first only looks familiar due to being able to construct it with pieces of the latter

I think I had this castle set:

but I'm pretty sure I had a gray one (as well or instead, I don't recall):

I find lego sets these rather limiting as the pieces are often so specific that you can only make what's pictured on the box

post sets you have, owned, or love regardless and maybe just drooled over and never owned

    drooled over:

    Lego <3
I used to play with space sets a lot, eventually cannibalizing them to make fighter jets (wanted to be a pilot when I was that age, just like everyone else ;p).
So stuff like blacktron, m tron, space police and at the last years ice planet.

Had a good deal of city sets too, but I can't seem to find the specific firestation and police station I had, nor the racetrack etc.

Some Technic too, and this was my favourite set:

My brother and I were spoiled with Legos. We actually had TWO Futuron Monorail Transport Systems - and some extra track suplements - so we would take all the track pieces and link them up into these massive trains. We actually had enough ramped pieces and support struts to make a train that went up and down our living room table. The base would be at the top, naturally.

God those were fun. And it gave grandparents an easy task when it came time for Christmas shopping. We'd usually spend Xmas morning assembling our latest creations, with boxes, instructions, plastic trays and tiny perforated plastic baggies littering the floor. One of our grandparents had a fuzzy blue carpet in the front room that would often get strands tangled up as we connected little pieces. Good times. Eventually we moved on to the Technic too, and I still have some of those back at my parents house.

    Some of my favorites:

Not sure if we had this exact set, but we had some blue, gray and translucent yellow pieces like this. Along with a tiny airport set, this was the earliest Lego I remember having.

    Best. Spacecar. Ever.

I added some black plating to mine (pieces similar to the ones used on the back wing), and even gave it a superficial air scoop over the roof, like a McLaren F1. It was mid/rear engined at least, so it sort of made sense.

Most of our non-technic lego we gave away to family friends with little kids. We still have most of the technic stuff, either in assembled form or in those big rubbermaid containers, but I miss assembling custom stuff form our pool of bricks. One thing I've noticed growing up with Lego is that its trended more and more towards highly specialized pieces. It makes the finished model on the box look less brick-y, but I think it stunts the flexibility of creating new things from scratch. Maybe I'm just being crotchety in my old age though.

    My Favorite was this ^

I had about 50 sets total, filled an entire room.

I had the space monorail as well as the Airport Shuttle.

For anyone out there looking for the nostalgia of putting their sets together again but lost the instructions, I found this website out there:

    Wow, nostalgia

Had this set when I was 7 as well as the other ship which was smaller but with blue and white sails. I was pissed though because it didn't float due to the fact that there were holes in the bottom of the deck pieces for whatever reasons. Also, the cannonballs actually fired, but you had to flick your finger against the back of this little rod to shoot black cylinders out.

Still have the pieces for this set sitting in my garage, the motor I believe still works to this day!

Had this set but was disappointed that the neon pieces like the windows and stuff didn't glow like the picture.

Best model ever. The back section detached and became a 4 wheel monster. I remember putting the thing together, it was a pain because I didn't understand the instructions on how to mount that front glass window but then I realized I had to use a spinning square piece... I also remember looking at the thing from the front with my 3 M-tron dudes sitting in it. It looked monstrous.

One of my favorites, though I believe I am missing the top roof piece that goes over the windshield.

Hopefully one day, if I have kids they will enjoy Legos as much as I did, though I kind of don't like the way Legos are now with models that are primarily made of pieces that are exclusive to a certain set. In the old days, you could almost make anything you saw in the catalog with pieces from other sets.

Yeah, I spent most of my time making my own creations with legos. Shit like aircraft carriers and fighter jets.

Thinking back on this and knowing how expensive Legos are, and probably were, I'm really appreciative of my parents buying them for me.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe lego.com now let's you purchase individual pieces. So if there were missing pieces, you can just order them from their website. This might be a direct store thing, or it might be something like "build your own creation".

I loved the shooting canons on the pirate ships, but later they made the canons non-shootable which really let me down. They probably made them non-shootable though I'm sure cause of kids being kids and shooting each other in the eyeballs or something stupid like that, hehe.

My biggest problem with the shootable canons were losing all the dang little black cylinders from shooting them all over the place.

I definitely loved the pirate sets but unfortunately the pieces were just a little too specialized to actually do anything with them but build longer/shorter ships.

I also have the grey castle. At one point I could build it from memory. I think at this point I would have to, seeing as how I don't think I have that manual lying around anymore.

While we're on the topic how exactly do you clean your legos? Mine are pretty dusty by now and I don't want to abrade away any of the plastic with too harsh a cleaning method.

I just put mine into a sink full of luke warm water and soap and washed them by hand using on of those sink spraying hoses (whatever they're called). That seemed to do the trick for me; not certain if there is a "correct" method to cleaning them, never really looked it up.

Just make certain not to loose any of the tiny pieces in the sink, one of my pieces fell down the drain and is stuck in the garbage disposal and I'm too afraid to shove my hand down in there to pull it out

Fuck you OP, fuck you straight through all the levels of hell.

    Now I'm missing my Lego...

This was my first "big" set. I had a few of the smaller Ice Planet ones too.
All the others were random wee sets like the River Rapids explorer boat and shit. I bet everyone had the red bi-plane, to have the bi-plane and one of the motorcycles was the epitome of pimp.

I still remember when I got enough bits to build an Indiana Jones dude out of all my scraps. Took so long to get all the pieces when I was only like 7 years old, but so fucking worth it.
