    Skydiving

The Bucket List thread inspired me to resurrect this discussion, given that it's been about a year and a half since I started the other thread. Anyone on BG besides Tyche and myself jump out of planes or BASE for fun? If so, post your license(s) here and let's organize a BG boogie! Prospective students/tandem students feel free to post here as well!

God that looks like so much damn fun, how much does it cost though because at only $100 per trip that's at least $10,000 total, nuts. Probably worth every penny though, what are the chances you pass out while falling and can't pull your chord?

Did it a couple of months ago, and it was AWESOME! I really wish I could do it again but it's just so pricey. I should just go ahead and get certified so it's only 25$ a jump, but the initial investment is killing me!

15-25 a jump Magus. The initial investment is, indeed, quite steep. Worth every penny though.

Skydiving is most definitely on my to-do list, however, the only thing I've really done is repel off sketchy shit. My good friend and I drive around in his truck with a ladder and mountain climbing gear looking for buildings with fire escapes or service ladders etc.. Not much to do in KS, but we've hit up most the buildings at KU and a couple of twenty-story buildings in our hometown. Always a good time.

Not to knock it, I'm sure it's thrilling for some, but the idea of launching oneself out of a plane thousands of feet in the air hurtling towards the ground with nothing but a possibly-faulty chute between one and imminent death just doesn't seem like the smartest idea in the world. Of course, I realize I could die at any moment anyway, but I believe in risk management XD Knowing me, I'd probably pass out from exhiliration/excess oxygen and forget/be unable to pull my chute XD

Still, grats on having the balls to do it, I know a lot of people who do and enjoy that kind of thing. I'm not one of them, and I'm okay with that. You look good up there, haha.

You know how if you suddenly "drop" in altitude and your heart races/panic a bit, is it true that once you reach the "free fall maximum speed" or whatever it is called (Note: I hate science) you "stop" having that feeling? I can't imagine having that feeling all the way down.

Granted I'd probably chicken out too for the same reasons as Silenka pointed out.

    Terminal Velocity?

Skydiving is one of those things that I'd like to try but probably never will due to paranoia.

Instead of skydiving I just jump off a stool 1000 times a day and get the same amount of free fall and develop some wicked calves.

It's been a some months since I last jumped. They'll make me static line when I go back . Been too damn busy with other goals lately. You can typically get licensed for about a $1500 or so investment. After that, and you buy your rigging, you just pay the price to go up...it's not that much. Of course, you can rent your rigging as well, but again, that can get costly.

You never get that feeling. Even when you first exit the plane relative wind prevents it.

As I mentioned in the bucket list thread, I'm going skydiving tomorrow :D It's a tandem dive, I've never even been in a plane before and I'm going to do this lol. I'll bump this when I get back Thursday night; If I don't, I died and I love you bg <3. Also to Silenka, on most modern parachutes, the reserve chutes have altimeters that automatically deploy the chute when you get too low.

Good luck Furt. Here's to hoping you don't bounce! Parachutes themselves aren't equipped with an altimeter, but the device you're thinking of is called an AAD and that DOES automatically deploy the reserve parachute at low altitudes if the rig is equipped with one.

Normally for your first 5 jumps up here, the instructor throws out the pilot chute for you, so you don't have to pull the chord yourself.

I ended up going a few years ago, had a blast. Was out drinking with my friends and they mentioned they were gonna go the next day. I said I would, thinking they'd just be too hungover. The next morning, heard them pull up and start honking the horn.
I bailed on my landing though. They 1-way radio you in, and they had me flare my chute too late and I came in kinda fast. Figuring I could just run it out, my timing/speed was way off and I Superman'd after tripping. Bastards never sent me the video I ordered, otherwise I'd still have my "landing" on repeat just for laughs.

It's actually pretty peaceful as well, considering that was my way of getting over my fear of heights.
