PS3 Media Server can't detect PS3

Trying to set up PS3 Media Server. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and my PS3 has the latest firmware.

UPnP is enabled on my router, firewalls are off, network discovery is on and the PS3 Media Server service has "Started," but all I get is a big "X" despite the Traces log saying:

It's ready! You should see the server appears on XMB

I have also tried using WMP 12 as a media server, but on the list of media devices I see no "unknown device" to allow (as many setup sites describe). So my PS3 can't detect any media servers and the media server programs can't detect a PS3. However, I can ping my PS3 just fine.

I've googled for like 2 hours and I'm out of ideas. Can BG help?

Right, I should say: using a Linksys router, wired connection to both PC and PS3.

Do you have FiOS? That router is hell with trying to set up media streaming.

I'd try turning UPnP off, though.

I'm using PMS and Nero 8, both work fine.

Check your antivirus. I know norton has can block the media server. There is this option in norton software. Try view map to see the network connection in your house (for example). One of them should be your ps3. Change trust level to full trust. You need to know which one is your ps3, based on ip address or mac address. Don't bother play around with UPnP because its not really a related problem. I worked as linksys customer service before and I get to solve this problem too.

My PS3 doesn't even appear on the Windows local network map.

shouldn't need to do anything fancy with your router, as long as UPnP is enabled that's all that's usually required.

anyway, i had this problem with the OSX version. at least in my case, it was a pretty easy fix. under the general config tab, i just entered in the local IP of the laptop i run it from under the 'force IP of the server' field, works like a charm ever since. not sure if that'll do the trick for you, but it takes all of about 10 seconds to try, so its worth a shot!

also, if you run peerguardian/peerblock, certain block lists will prevent it from working properly as well, so you might want to disable those.

Ok this picture basically the norton. You have to go to this page and change the trust level to full trust. This can be applied to any other antivirus software. What's your antivirus software anyway? Maybe I can help you find how to do it using your antivirus. This is safe method because your pc will allow all connection to your ps3 only because the antivirus itself specify only ps3 as safe connection.

I don't think the Windows network map will show your ps3 if you don't check your antivirus. And router's firmware basically doesn't really help too much though.

This media server computer doesn't have AV software.

unfortunately the same as pooky, i actually formatted/downgraded my media box back to XP when i just couldn't get it to work reliably under win7 x64 (didn't try x86). the server would connect but i'd get constant timeout errors, and i tried 3 fresh installs. i finally gave up and as always it's worked perfectly in xp. i'm sure there's something up with pms & windows 7 (at least x64). as for the server just not being detected at all i bet it's a simpler problem than what i had, but i wanted this chance to extra bitch about pms+win7. i run win7 x64 on my main system and i love it, just could never have pms work fine with it.

Can you even ping the ip address of your ps3? You can also try to ping from other pc in your network to your ps3. Hopefully, the other pc use other OS such as xp, vista or mac. I'm sure there is some program or something blocking the connection between your pc and ps3. And if its related to purely windows 7 related, I definitely have no idea since I never try windows 7 at all.

Yeah, I can ping the PS3 from both the Win7 system and another WinXP system, no problem.

Tomorrow I will try installing PMS (tee hee hee) on WinXP to see if I can at least detect the PS3; the WinXP machine is a piece of shit, so I couldn't stream anything even if it does work.

I found a good tutorial on doing this when I set mine up on Windows 7 x64. I used Windows Media Center though, so I'm not sure if that's available to you or not. I'll see if I can find it.

Which version of PMS are you using? The download sites have 1.1 (at least a couple weeks ago that's all it was) but the forums have a 1.2 version. I've found the 1.2 version to be far superior for detection purposes and I'm using Win7 64-bit.

What version of Linksys router do you have? I've got a WRT54G and it was hell getting it set up to work with my ps3, even now, I have to disable media sharing on my ps3 if I want to stay connected to the PSN.

One other thing, the most obvious one, do you have the media sharing turned on in the options of your PS3? I know its obvious, but it could be your problem.

I've tried the 1.1 (latest stable version) of PMS and the 1.2 beta on both WinXP and Win7. None work. All of those and WMP can't detect the PS3.

Media sharing is enabled on the PS3.

My Linksys router model is BEFSR41. I probably need to fuck with the router settings, but I am not sure with what precisely I should be fucking. Unfortunately, I don't have another router laying around to test connectivity that way.

Uhh lol isn't that BEFSR41 is wired-only router. It's definitely too old. Like 5 years kind of router? That might be another reason too but idk now haha.

Did you try updating the firmware on the router? If you can't get it to work in XP either then something is definitely wrong, most likely source has to be the router so you might have to try and find one to test to see if it is that if new firmware doesn't help.

I have a folder on my external drive and inside the drive i have a folder called Anime.

on Windows media server i put the default folder to be E:Anime

I have about 250videos in there all separated in different folders the videos are all .avi or .mkv

When i go on my PS3 it sees the Anime folder, but i have like 20 videos instead of 250 and i have like 3 anime folder instead of 12.


Also i have a series that i have 80 episodes all .avi when i click on it, it says it cannot read the format.


I though that the ps3 could read almost any video.

Did i do something wrong?
