As usual, convos with my buddies turn into topics on BG. We were inspired by the recent ESPN article posted where you select the best celtics and lakers by position of all time and went on for over an hour about basketball, baseball, and some football.
So, my all-time NBA team.
PG: Magic. Little more competition than MJ, but thats not saying much since Jordan has no competition. Oscar Robertson if Magic didn't exist. If lower back therapy breakthroughs occur in the next couple years and prevent Nash from snapping in half, hes in the conversation. Stockton will get some looks.
SG: Michael. Needs no explanation. People will continue to compare Kobe as he continues to play well. Hes in his prime and who knows what his resume will look like when its all over. His team right now has several years of competition left in it, amazing structuring by management, the only blip not finding a way to remedy the egos of a young Kobe and the Big Cactus who would have got a couple more together at least (though those Spurs teams make it not exactly guaranteed) and the ridiculous trading kobe talk. However, Kobe can't do anything to surpass Jordan as the best ever in peoples eyes. Jordan's echelon is occupied only by Gretzky in terms of unanimous selection and the model in which all else is compared. When a guy with his stat sheet, records, and performances is most well known for the intangibles that made it all possible, that speaks volumes.
SF: Bird: Same as Magic competition wise. I guess technically Lebron is here, regardless, he has a long way to go to be even in the conversation. Crazy hes been in the league 7 years. Funny though, they say Bird did the most with the least, the same defense often used to defend Bron. Baylor and Dr. J probably interchangeably in 2nd, baylor may make #1 spot on some peoples lists.
PF:Timmy: Gotta be Duncan, and hes not even done. I used to say Malone then charles, and if this list was based on entertainment value Timmy would compete if not win last place, but the crown is his now.
C: This was the biggest debate, lot of strong contenders. Russell is probably 1, the championships and utter dominance are obvious. No one had an answer for him, and he was only 6'9...Kareem has to be a close second, his competition was stronger and he dominated in his own regard. Hakeem rounds out the top 3 for me, game was close to Kareem but with better hands. This is also where my homer pick comes in with the one and only Shaqzilla. Give him a 10 foot jumpshot and he's my number one. He banged with the best for 15ish years, at his prime was the closest thing to Russell, ever, at the center position in terms of teams just not having an answer for him (pre-hack a shaq). The fact if he was built like Russell, Kareem, or Hakeem he wouldn't have been nearly as good and that he is a fucking terrible free throw shooter allowing teams to finally realize the hack-a-shaq technique make it hard for me to make a legit argument for him. However, in his prime, he as the closest thing to Russell in terms of just being on another physical level that separated him and compensated for his lack of high skill level.
Ill work on my baseball one and a couple football positions, minus boring O-line stuff.
So, what do your lists look like? Feel free to include any sport, im just curious. I think basketball is the easiest one.
