Basically, I like to play FFXI on my TV - and it works fine.
However, if I turn my TV off or switch to check something on TV, it crashes POL.
Is there a way to prevent this?

Well, POL will crash anytime the desktop resolution is changed. However I don't know if that counts for TVs. Probably would if you were switching to an HD channel, but that's just a wild guess.
It crashes even if the channel isn't HD.
Actually, it's not that POL crashes when I switch to the TV, it's when I try to switch back to FFXI (HDMI2).
Upon going back to HDMI2, the resolution changes back to 1440x900 (I put it to 1280x720 for FFXI when using the TV). Why does it force my resolution back to 1440x? Can I force it to stay on 1280x720, and would that stop the crashes?
The screen is signaling to the computer that is it disconnected, and reconnecting it causes the screen to flash and crashes FFXI. It's likely something with that graphics card and driver. My old ATI Radeon card would flash both my screens if either of them got turned on or off, until I changed to Omega Drivers (as well as playing the Windows "device connected" sound). My new nVidia card doesn't flash at all when I turn the TV on or off or my second monitor.
So would Omega drivers for my ATI Raedon fix it? I'll have to look into that, thanks.
I can't seem to find Omega Drivers for an ATI Mobility Raedon HD 3450... anyone know where I could find one, or another that would work for this?
