OK, so most likely this is already common knowledge by now, but I will post it here anyway for a quick reference.

If you folks are looking to smash your Vista disc with a hammer or nuke it in the microwave... Here is another good reason to do it!

Microsoft is offering Windows 7 Pro for only 30 bucks! One catch though... Only students can claim the discount, and by students I mean college, as in you better have a @<school name>.edu email address. I'm sure you can find one of those though.

Addtionally, you can obtain Office 2010 Pro for 80 bucks which normally retails for $500. You can follow the link here:

This thread is primarily for informational purposes. Yes I know about shit that schools offer, and oh I know about free word processors and such.

But, there are people who don't know as much as you or me. Maybe you know someone who needs Windows, and you happen to have a .edu email... why not hook that person up?

Informational purposes, keep that in mind.

MS Works can open/use Office docs/spreadsheets but not nearly as indepth as Office.

or you could just use your favorite copy of linux which is $0, and then install openoffice which is $0.

Even if you know nothing about linux, you could use ubuntu or mint as both of those are probably more user friendly than windows

Can't use Linux or OpenOffice for work. Most people will likely agree with that. I like the idea of OpenOffice but it simply isn't an option for most.

Or you can just get Win7 Pro x64 for free from MSDNAA? Other things to consider, open office != MS Office, and quite frankly, most of the open source stuff is much more of a pain in the ass over time than MS's software.

If you can't use it at work, ask your job if they have volume licensing before you go and pay for somethign, and if you mean you can't use it because of file extensions, openoffice can save files in .doc, .docx, etc.

How good is the equation editor? I'm trying to think of things I'd use it for and I'm coming up with word sometimes, excel very rarely, and powerpoint once in a thousand years. All things that Works has :\

For me personally, I fucking hate OO Calc. I use Excel 2007 and Calc doesn't even come close to the same level of functionality. I've tried it more then a few times but I simply can't get the volume of work done with it. It's slow as shit opening very large files and I can't use Pivot Tables.

I don't see OpenOffice as a viable option for most medium or larger size companies. Yes it's free, but it simply isn't as good. \

It's pretty solid for what it's built for. Pretty situational app though.

not 100% positive, but i think the reason most people dislike works is because of the file extensions it saves files in, i.e. .wks, .wdb. , and on larger scales doesn't include microsoft outlook, which most companies use with their exchange server. For basic stuff though, i'd say its perfectly fine. I honestly didn't even know that microsoft works was still around, i thought it was phased out years ago.

Wiki says it was replaced in 2009 with Office Starter 2010
