    Laptop Overheated, Problems.

So with the super heat wave my laptop overheated while I was watching videos. Nothing new, it's shut down before with too much heat. This time, however, when I booted back up it started beeping on start up. Once I finally got it going, I can no long Alt+ Tab in Windows 7, nor do the mini menus stay up when I click minimized windows. Like when yuo have 3 Firefoxes open and click the icon all 3 mini windows pop up, no longer works. So far those are the problems I've found.

    Any thoughts?

your AERO got disabled? Is that what I am reading? labtops and overheating go hand and hand, clean that bitch out, put new thermal paste on the GPU and CPU and by a cooling pad (24$).

As for the rest of the issues, Same thing happened to computer I was working on, just needed to reinstall(update) driver. If your computer is overheating so bad, that it does not boot back up pretty quickly, you are doing some damage to the chips etc.

Run your diagnostic tool and make sure your fans and thermometers are running correctly, you seem to be shutting down because of overheating more than you should.

Also what laptop is it? You could try to lower your voltage usage for your CPU, (is very safe to do) and can lower some heat.

You could also lift your laptop with water bottle caps also, but do get that chill mat. Get also a dust buster, dust is a laptop killer.

And the obvious silly answer but does wonders in hot countries:

Blast that bastard directly to your laptop and laugh at your heat problems

I have a Dell XPS. Mostly overheating cause it's 35 degrees this past week (95F) I'm gonna look into that cooling mat. I re-installed Windows 7 overnight last night. The alt-tab problem is gone now, but I like the ideas for keeping it from overheating. Thanks guys.

Could try this program, http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php , to see your laptop's temps (if it works). Can come in handy if you want to avoid overheating your machine for too long (can show your current cpu temp in the taskbar).

A friend's hp laptop could actually reach 190F+ with a cpu burn in program (has pentium4-M, freaking hot running chip). I let it stay there for a while and it never shut down (over an hour, lifted and ventilated, would still reach 190+), yet it wouldn't reboot if restarted. Would have to wait until it completely cooled down (cold start), which could take a while. Apparently this was a "known problem" that you had to send the stupid thing back to hp to fix... engineered to fail essentially.

My craptop, running that same cpu burn in prog (has pentium M, fairly cool chip), only reaches 140-150F and never higher, and likes to hover around 105F just surfing web 1.0.

The others' suggestions are good ones when dealing with a hot laptop... really wish these companies fully considered the heat these things produce, especially when they're actually on your lap... That hp could really burn you.

oh if you have XPS definitely lower your CPU voltage. If you need any help on this let me know. The reason is in most XPS the GPU and CPU share the same heatsink. So if you lower your CPU heat, the lesser chance of overheating when using GFX intensive applications (such as aero). I have XPS also and I dropped 9C on mine. Just from undervolting.

This is exactly what I'm doing now with my Inspiron 1705. The right fan seems to have stopped spinning altogether so the laptop overheats after like 5 minutes of use. ;/

Everyone with a laptop should be using some sort of cooling fan pad. A friend of mine complains her laptop is failing, she never turns it off and it overheats.
