So, I was watching a documentary last night in which 5 guilds across the world were fighting to become the first to kill a boss in WoW. In this documentary, interviews were conducted with many members throughout the world. Questions were asked such as , “How do you balance your 40 hour a week raiding schedule with your work schedule?”. A few people complained about having trouble balancing work/WoW, amongst them was a law student. The guild leader was QQing to the law student that he needed to raid more. The law student felt bad because he wanted to help everyone succeed in the game, but he really needed to get his school work done.
This started a discussion on another forum I read, in which people were discussing the qualities that Guild Leaders acquire that can be used in real life situations. I started to think…how could I even put these experiences I’ve had into an interview setting, as if I was interviewing for a management position in a company. I realized, there is literally no way to convey these experiences in real life, without sounding like a total sperger. For example, this is what I came up with:
Interviewer: So, why do you think you're qualified for this leadership position at our company?
Me: I've spent 8 years running a guild in both FFXI and WoW, which are MMORPG. In that time, I've balanced bank spending, budgets, and distribution that translates into tens of thousands USD, organized 100+ people into working together toward a common goal, 6 nights a week, for at least 5 hours a day. In this time, I've learned how to deal with troublesome members, rewarding effort, and making hard decisions that affect the gaming experiences for many people under me. I feel these events and responsibilities have groomed me for a leadership role in your company.
Interviewer: Get out.
Me: Ok.
There is literally no way to do this without sounding like a complete retard. Is there even a way to do this without sounding like a complete shut-off?
