2 questions: laptop overheating and storing ffxi on external HD

Ok so first question I have is this. I just bought a mini netbook and want to put my regular laptop all on it. However I am not sure how I get all my files from comp A to comp B, but I did also buy an external HD figuring i could toss it all on that too. For some reason my laptop will not make a backup on the HD, always says it fails, so I think I need to manually pull every file from my laptop and store it on my external drive, then pull it off the external onto my netbook.

I want take take all my FFXi files and toss them onto my netbook, but I am not sure where I dl all these from? Where are they stored normally? I thought I had it all 9gb in size, but apparently it was not it since I could not load up playonline. Help plz!

secondly, I am having issues with my laptop overheating and turning off. I cannot pull it apart and clean out the heat sink (not even sure if dust is the problem). SOme days it will shut off constantly, and some other days I can run ffxi, itune, surf web,a nd watch video for literally 40 hrs strait without an issue. SO I am not sure why it turns off so often. Is there a way to turn off the heat sensor? Most advise not to do this because it could overheat and wreak the laptop, but I notice no diff in temp from when it shuts down to regualr heavy use like in my 40hr scenario. Help!

Transfer files with a crossover cable, shared folders/files on a network, or bluetooth wireless transfer if both devices have receivers.

I'm unfamiliar with copying over FFXI files, but there might be registry files that are necessary for the game to function instead of copy/paste like WoW. I'm sure people have found a way around it and posted tutorials, so search for a few of those.

As for your shutdown issue, is your laptop just shutting off without warning, or is there a blue screen to help diagnose the issue? Are you using it on a desk/bed for 40 hours, or are you moving it around constantly?

just shuts off w/o warning. So yesterday I could not go 1 hr w/o it shutting off on me, today i had no work or school so I played literally 28 hrs strait.... kinda regret it now since i did not get sleep and work ssoon! I have 0 issues and its as hot if not hotter than it was yesterday... makes no sense to me. I play with it on the couch, but I have it resting on a fan.

When it shuts off, is it connected to an outlet, or strictly battery?
