    New phone time!

    So, I'm getting a new phone tomorrow. The three contenders are the new Samsung Galaxy S, iPhone4 32G, or a bit lower in the running, the BB Torch.

    I don't plan to use it for 'gaming' so to speak, so reasons like that aren't as important to me. Smoothness and sleekness of operation + function + good apps are what I'm looking for.

    Smoothness and sleekness = tie
    Function = Galaxy S
    Apps = iPhone

    It's about a tie. Unless you are looking for something specialized, I'd say you can't go wrong with either. I'd go with the Galaxy S myself, but some people are into the simpleness (and slightly better app store) of the iPhone. The app store for the Android has really caught up in recent months, though.

    Galaxy because I'm Android, but iPhone isn't a bad choice either :s

    Smoothness and sleekness = tie
    Function = Galaxy S
    Apps = iPhone
    That's pretty accurate.

    What provider?

    I have an Epic, and I love it, so I'll back up the Galaxy S.

    apps are retarded, you only use useful stuff which both phones are going to have some sort of version of what you need. Also, rooting and taking COMPLETE FUCKING ADVANTAGE of an Android phone is so much easier, and better, than any i-product. Have fun putting a custom rom and kernel on your iphone and tripling your batter--oh wait, sorry, my bad, sucks to be you. (Honestly: I don't know if i-stuff can do that, they couldn't back when I was into hacking my itouch, and I really doubt that's changed)

    Between the iPhone and Galaxy, there isn't really a wrong choice.

    I've had an opportunity to demo out the Galaxy from Samsung 10 days ago via Samsung rep at a training seminar. Only thing I'd say is bad as a con from the 20 mins I tried it out was the camera seems slightly better on the iPhone. The one thing that was surprising is I can actually fit it in my dress pants better than I thought it'd fit but I doubt it'd fit in my jeans. But functionality and running was smooth and felt great. I guess best part; no fking death grip haha! If you decide on the iPhone may want to wait until the come out with the new cdma chips for the iphones supposedly coming to Verizon. I'd expect there might be an influx of iphones being sold for cheap or a price war when that occurs.

    If you get a torch prepare for wanting to kill yourself. If you like breaking warranties and having more open ended fun get the Galaxy S. If you like sucking steve job's dick, get the iPhone. Or if you want the bold choice, wait, jump to verizon in 4 months and enjoy the fresh new lineup of android devices.

    I'm in canada so My carriers are different, plus we get phones a little later than usual. Plus I'm replacing a broken phone, so waiting isn't much of an option, heh.

    iPhone app store isn't any better, it just has 40,000 fart apps instead of only 15,000 fart apps like the Android market.

    Or you could say..."Have fun having to root your android and put all this custom shit on it to get the battery life that the iphone has out of the box...".

    And honestly, I can't see how rooting an android could be easier than jailbreaking an iphone. You literally type in a website in the address bar and slide the unlock slider. I jailbroke my wife's phone while driving off from the AT&T store parking lot. The douchey android users are getting as bad as the douchey apple lovers.

    Go to the store, play with them, and leave with a phone. You can't go wrong with either, so get the one you like.

    How long does the battery last?

    And rooting is just as easy as that most of the time >.>

    Well, it depends. Different people get different results because they use it in different ways. To say that the battery life of the iphone 4 is a strong suite would be an understatement.

    Here's engadget...
    The battery life on the iPhone 4 has been outstanding thus far, exceeding our expectations for longevity during testing. We’ve only had a short time to use the phone, but in the week or so we’ve been carrying the device as our main phone, we’ve had pretty amazing results under normal to heavy use. In fact, we managed to squeeze more than 38 hours — yes, 38 hours — of life out of a single charge using the phone as we normally would. We’re talking calls, some gaming, lots of push email and calendar invites, playing music over Bluetooth in the car, and just general testing (like downloading new apps, rearranging icons, tweaking settings). We went from 10:30AM on a Saturday morning till 1:00AM on Monday without needing to charge the phone. Of course, it switched itself off just after the clock struck 1, but it was thrilling — like that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer and the car salesman see how far they can get in a car with the tank on E. Sitcom references aside, the battery life seems markedly improved in the iPhone 4, and why not? It’s got a much larger battery coupled with that iPad-powering A4, which has already shown that it can sip rather than gulp power.
    I keep wifi off on mine, and I charge it about once every 2 days. Normal usage, some angry birds, and a lot of music (I sleep with the phone under my pillow listening to podcasts and I use it when running).

    Boingboing

    With light use, but with 3G data and WiFi turned on the whole time, I got a full 4 days of battery life. With very heavy video recording and playback, instant messaging, email and data tethering over 3G, I got a full day of battery life. I didn’t have enough time before this review to do careful benchmark testing against Apple’s claims, so I can’t provide specific percentages, but it felt like the battery life was a good 20-25% meatier.
    Two best features of iphone 4, it's tiny, and it's got great battery efficiency right out of the box. That can be even better when you use something like SBsettings.

    Edit: 9 hours and 36 minutes since it was last fully charged. 75% left.

    Seconded. Don't take recommendations from people here without a grain of salt. This forum is great for most products, but when it comes to phones it falls apart. Use it to narrow down the results, but only to that point. Most of the time, they are going to recommend what they use and shit on the other brands. I love my iphone4, and every time I hold or use a droid or blackberry I just laugh quietly to myself, but the same can be said for those people who want to see my iphone for a minute.

    I can attest to the iPhone 4's battery life. My friend came down to visit this weekend and forgot his charger. Started off with about 75% battery life and I think he left today with about 50%ish. Granted, we didn't use the phone much besides a little RE4 gaming and texting/maps. Also, I've always found the interface to be a bit cleaner on the iOS devices, but it's pretty limited on the customization outside of jailbreaking which, as Tyche said, is super fucking easy now. I have not had a chance to actually play with the Galaxy S, but there was so much hating on the iPhone that I had to put in my two cents on the subject. I'll go with the, "Go to the store, play with the phones, and see which one you like," option. The Galaxy S and iPhone 4 are both great phones.

    i can also attest to the iphone 4's great battery life. i was at a music festival last weekend and recorded an entire 2 hour deadmau5 concert in 720p and only used 50% of my battery. i fucking love this phone.

    not to mention once you jailbreak it, it becomes so much better.

    yeah, go and play with them both and see what fits you better. i have a galaxy s and wouldnt give it up for an iphone, but its all preference. i hate the iphone interface, but maybe cause i dont really use ipods either so wasnt familiar with it and the android interface makes more sense

    Are people really trying to argue battery life on an Iphone versus an Android device. First, I've got several friends with an Iphone 4, I have a Droid X, there has not been a day when I don't kick their ass in battery life. Second, it doesn't motherfucking matter, because my phone can actually change out batteries! This is not a discussion or argument that an Iphone user can make or use at any point.

    Seriously.. I'm fucking boggled that someone tried to even bring this up.
