    Critical Attack Bonus caps at 100% (Critical Hit Damage) (Updated May 2011)

    Starting a thread for it because there's bits and pieces in other threads and information like this gets lost easily~

    Critical Attack Bonus is a term multiplied at the end of the damage calculation. (ie; Critical Attack Bonus+5% would turn a 100 damage critical to 105 damage.) Since ranged hits always cap at 3.0 pdif, and criticals are always 25% more, it makes testing this easy and simple.

    For these tests I used NIN and SAM, /w Killer shortbow.

    (39 DMG + 24 fSTR2 + 41 Ammo)*3.0 = 312 damage
    Expected Critical: 312*1.25 = 390 damage

    RR or SS alone add Critical Attack Bonus+30%: (Reposting pic.)

    507/390 = 1.3 confirming the 30% bonus.

    RR + Kamome(NIN Katana which adds Critical Attack Bonus):

    546/390 = 1.4 showing a 40% bonus, which shows us Kamome's 10% is additive with RR's 30%.

    Both RR + SS and RR + SS + Kamome give us this:

    585/390 = 1.5 showing a 50% bonus, which indicates there's a cap.


    WAR's Critical Attack Bonus+5% trait + RR:

    526/390 = 1.3487
    390*1.35 = 526.5
    Damage is floor'd after this step, like all other damage calculations, and is showing an additive 30%+5% from both atma and traits~

    585/390 = 1.5 shows that traits are additive with Atma/Equipment and conforms to the 50% cap.

    Very, very good find thanks Kirschy.

    So, does this mean that Sanguine Scythe is over kill, and VV should be used in conjunction with RR instead of it? (depending on gear/traits)


    For example, DRG doesn't get crit atk bonus of any form, so the extra 20% on Drakesbane would be nice. But THF & WAR do, as well as WAR having Claymore/Brave Grips, THF has X's Knife and NIN has Kamome to supplement extra crit damage, which would really shrink SS down to +10% or less.

    Atma of the Hero is a decent middle-ground. Get a Minor Critical Attack bonus and some STR. Not sure if it would beat either of the +50 STR atmas though.

    I ditched my X's Knife to be honest...not sure why non-Mandau thf's would keep it at this point either.

    Would there be any easy way to test if the "2% weapon skill damage" augment on anwig salade can bring your total bonus to a crit weaponskill to 52% dmg? I've been using a +4STR/AGI, WS ACC+15, WS DMG +2% Anwig for Blade: Hi. If total bonus dmg (not just total crit bonus) caps at 50%, then the 2% on the head is wasted and I'd be better off with a Bersail Cap (+8 AGI) or Maat's Cap (+7 AGI and STR to help cases where fSTR isn't capped).

    Given what a pain in the ass it is to obtain it, I'm not that surprised. Auric Dagger is much better, and Empyreans/OAT/2-3 are far more worth the effort than spamming that stupid BC. Now, I suppose this goes into the "What's Better?" thread, but any info on the Haste giving Atmas yet? Just wondering if they're viable now that we know there's a cap to crit dmg.

    the two that i've seen are 1% haste, I believe Kirschy tested one of them. I can't remember what type of haste it is, thought (gear/magic/ja)

    Gear, iirc. Doesn't really matter though, since 1% haste can't possibly beat any atma worth using.

    For the sake of the illiterate readers who skim BG, I would like to request the title is reworded to address the damage portion of critical hits (attack bonus isn't cutting it I guess?) - simply as a means of lowering the number of morons who attempt to convince others that the cap on critical hit rate is 50%.

    For the record this in no way is addressing Yugl, I have had several people spout this fallacy.
